Default Wine pairing with pizza....
I'm making a steak and blue cheese pizza with a pesto basil sauce. What would you pair with it? Something like a Merlot? Would the pairing change if I used a red pizza sauce instead of the pesto basil sauce?

I don't have a lot of wine drinking experience but for red I like Dellatorri Chianti or Bell'agio Chianti

hmmm pesto basil and steak with blue cheese.... wow... I would think that technically, you could match reds and whites to that. I'd probably go for a white that reminds me of a red like a chardonnay.
Without the tomato sauce though, I'd have a harder time matching a red, I think. It seems the blue cheese and pesto will be the dominate flavors on the pizza so again, I'd have to go with a chardonnay.
But what do I know?

Very little when it comes to wine, apparently. I've been drinking the stuff practically on a daily basis since I was 16, so heed my advise: Chardonnay (i.e., white burgundies) is a terrible choice for strong cheeses. Only the most concentrated, full-flavored, and powerful reds should be paired with strong cheeses (think Chambertin and Corton from Burgundy, Barolo and Barbaresco, Dalmatian Posip or Postup, Spanish Vega Sicilia.) Needless to say these should all be mature reds, and not young.

However considering the steak and pesto-sauce I would try a young red that is fairly versatile, either a Rhone, or Cab from the Loire. If you must go the Beaujolais route, stick with a Beaujolais-Villages as the quality is better.

I'd just spray the mother****er with ketchup and pop a bottle of Moonshine to go with it.

Italian Chianti goes well with meaty pizza's.
