I think some of the new tablets will definitely outperform the iPad but I can't think of anything that offers the functionality of the iPod Touch.
They will - by the time the iPad refresh is coming out probably. They definitely won this round.

I have no doubt that they will outperform the iPad. The biggest hurdles for the other manufactures is going to be dev support and when the next iPad launches in ~April.
Fair point, but I suspect (and I'm purely speculating) because the iPad is supposed to be more of an everyday computer replacement than the iPhone that Apples share of the market will end up mimicking their desktop / laptop market share.

Due to its dependence on owning a computer, it is more of a supplement or a portable extension to an existing computer, at least currently.

...while it's stil a niche product. But what happens when everyone has tablets out and customers want to seamlessly swap stuff between the two platforms?

Agreed, it is a very nice experience and is easier to use than the one on the phone. (Although Safari on the phone does a great job, the screen size is limiting.) The only downside is the rendering time on pages. I used to use my laptop whenever at home or traveling for media, web, e-mail, IMs, etc but it has been completely replaced by the iPad, especially because I only charge it every few days. (Sold my laptop last Friday) I would never be able to rely solely on my phone.

I would say the lack of flash and the huge rendering time would be enough to not call it a desktop experience. Window slates on the other hand...

Certainly nowhere near huge (but not dual core PC speed either) and the lack of flash banners I personally only see a perk. I am hard pressed to find a site that hosts flash video that doesn't have h.264 versions as well. The Windows tablets undoubtedly have more functionality overall but are nowhere near as nice to use nor as responsive.

To be honest in find the browsing experience almost as fast as safari on my MacBook. Yes maybe slightly sluggish here and there but I would absolutely call this great.

I find browsing on my iPhone 4 slightly less exciting where as when I now look at my iPhone 3 it is... Wow was I using this just a couple days ago....???

In fact I haven't touched my laptop today at all except for syncing my iPad and iPhone

..are probably slow and very clunky. I can't imagine having a touch screen UI layer on top of a desktop OS will be anywhere near as snappy as iOS in its current form. And considering there will be dearth of an app store on a W7 tablet, programs will not be custom made for the hardware and will probably run quite slow. It's going to take non-apple tablets quite a bit of time to catch up to the iPad, similar to how long it took smart phones to catch up to the iPhone. Apple paved the way, and everyone will benefit from the outcome (especially consumers).

They definitely won this round. And 4 billion dollars of revenue in a quarter says that others agree with you... [yes]

I assume he meant the iPad because he mentioned he was getting one as well.

Not quite sure yet, I keep looking back and forth at both of them. You will be the first to know if I catch any leads.
On iPad. Got the iPad the next day.

They are quite not the same experience iPad and iPhone. iPhone goes to mobile version of most sites where iPad will take u straight to the full site. (of course u can do that on iPhone too)

Bigger screen makes a huge difference.
