How can I convince my gf to study in the UK ...
 

I've been going out with my Japanese girlfriend for around ~6 months.
I've known for a long time that she wants to study abroad and that she wants to do a degree in 'jewellery' or 'jewellery design' (it's named different things in different places).

Ideally it would be great if she could come to the UK to do her degree especially if (for a while) we could stay at my parents we wouldn't have to worry about the costs of bills and rent etc. until I found a job.
Although she's interested in the UK to study she's said that it's very expensive for her to study there.
I don't know if it's possible, but is there anyway she can get a grant or a bursary or something? I know the UK is expensive, I don't know if it's more expensive than the US, Canada, Aus or other places. Is it?

I know it's her choice to do a degree somewhere abroad and I should respect her life ambition but I've been in Japan for only just over 2 years and it feels like my home already. If I had to then move to a different country (not the UK) for her degree - that'd be another 3 years away from my home and in a place i'd have to somehow get a visa to work there for (unless it was the in the EU).
I came to Japan because I wanted to - I have no intention of living abroad anywhere else where I would be practically starting from scratch again and I can't get on with any ambitions I have.

I know it's also a question of our relationship but I feel this will all work a lot better for both of us if she came to the UK to study - It wouldn't matter where in the UK it was either.
Unfortunately I don't know anything about international students in the UK - does anyone have any advice they can give me? Or any ideas on how I can convince her to come here?

Honestly I don't know how one could convince someone to go to england to study abroad. Other countries like France, Italy, Spain, and so one are considered more interesting, beautiful, and friendly than England (well maybe not France).
When I hear england I think of chavs, bad teeth, bad food, bad weather, queen, drunks, soccer, and big ben.
France I think south of france, Paris, eiffel tower, french cuisine, accordions, and beautiful language.
Italy I think of Rome, Venice, Art, food, architecture, and so on....

I'm Scottish btw, but that post made my LOL. You obviously have no idea, I've travelled to all those places and let me tell you London is cleaner and more friendly than any of the others, it also has an extremely rich art scene, beautiful architecture and amazing food.

London is probably the most cultured city in the world. England also has some of the best restaurants in the world. Have you been here?

I agree. Been to many of the bigger and more famous cities, and London is simply an awesome place. The weather can be a downer but its not like it never rains in Rome. And I was very surprised how clean it actually is. I've spent only one day in Washington so far, and comparing the two London is a much more interesting place.

Then again my favorite city will always be Hong Kong, I just love the mixture of eastern and western/british culture. Well organized, people speak english, great infrastructure, but still exotic with great stuff to see. Though I wish Britain would have never signed a 99 year contract but a 999 year contract for the place. Seems like a lot of repliew are focussed on London - is that where he wants to study?
As has been suggested, if his course of study allows it, there are a lot of other great places around the world they could go to - perhaps several with a year in each?
There's also the cost of living to consider.

Firstly that is all stereotypical garbage and secondly she won't be able to study in France, Italy etc. because she doesn't speak their language.

She has good English so will have to go to an English speaking country to study (and also Sweden)

That's a shame - limits her to about half the planet...

...which contains the best Universities on the planet anyway.

A friend of mine went to the UK for a degree and just finished this past semester. Anyway, she paid for it through a little from the school itself in grants/funding/study aid, and the majority through scholarships for international students. (there are also US gov grants and loans, but those require you to be a US citizen, dunno if Japan has similar programs)

So the best bet imo is to contact the schools that have the right programs and they'll point her towards money. Because no matter the country, the one thing financial aid councilors share is knowledge of where students can get money to give to them.

The task would be so much easier if it was about how to get her not to come to the UK.

I'd tell her to save her money, what kind of Mickey Mouse degree is that? Can't she just get a job at a goldsmiths or similar?

Actually I will stick up for the poms and agree London town is a very nice place to be. What they have done with the city to make it more accessible in recent years makes it a great place to hang out.

In some ways its worse in the summer, been on the underground when its "only" 25C top side? Highly unpleasant.
