Default portable air conditioners?
Anybody know much about portable air conditioners? I need one for a small, 1 floor house, and the main living area doesn't have any windows to put a window AC in. I would guess that the house is maybe 1000 - 1200 sq ft.

All AC units, whether window or portable, need an outlet for the exhaust to vent out of. You can get a portable AC unit for about $400 at home depot or lowes. It comes with an exhaust tube that you would normally put out your window, but I'm sure you could find a way to lead it out into the garage for ventilation. I have one that I put in a spare bedroom and it works great.

I'm in the USA as well. So the main living area (re: 16 hours a day) has no opening window (just a bay window in the front), but has the door to the garage and the front door available. How could someone use a portable AC unit with a door to the outside like that? Would the vent have to be mounted somehow?

I'm not exactly sure yet, just looking at the options that are out there. It's hard finding some kind of central place to put the AC unit (and no, central air is way out of the price range). It would be nice for a portable AC to be very portable, so it could be wheeled into the bedroom at night, and into the living room during the daytime, if there's anything like that.

it's not just the room size to take into account, it's the temperature the room is - you're going to need a much larger unit for a room that gets direct sunlight with an outside temperature of 110f than one in the shade with an outside temperature of 90f!

I recently worked on a house where the owner used a portable unit for cooling. he had rigged up some kind of system so that it ventend into the attic of his house. he had put a square duct vent in his cieling in each beedroom and one in his living room. I couldnt tell if the tube for the vent was held in place to the duct with some kind of magnetic system to the vent or a latch, but when he moved the unit to another room he would pull it down and close the duct in that room and move it into his bedroom at night. he said it only cost him about $20 per room for the duct materials and he did the work his self.
