Of course we shouldn't give up on them. But I'm just saying that it's just prolonging the inevitable. I don't think that giving them vaccines will solve any of their problems. I think the only solution for these countries is to be rid of the corruption and actually get the billions of dollars worth of aid to the people that it should be going to and where it should be spent. They need to become sustainable not rely on first world countries forever.
touche, I can't argue with that. You're right long term...

Default Gates to Donate $10B for Vaccines
I am speechless. [thumbup]

Bill and Melinda Gates, here Friday at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, announced a $10 billion donation to develop and distribute new vaccines to poor countries. It is the largest donation from the couple's charitable foundation.

Wow, I hope he backs this up with investments in sustainable farming to feed all those extra mouths.

But seriously, this is incredible news.

Like predicted years ago, Gates is now entering his 'grandfather' stage of his lifetime. And just like Rockefeller before him, Gates is giving back to the world that gave so much to him. Too bad more super wealthy people do not follow suit!

He's not. The amount of money he gives to charities (including his own) far outwieghs any tax breaks he gets... Really obvious if you think- 10 billion, how much do you think the guy makes a year

Gates has been giving hundreds of millions away for years. He's been the 2nd largest charity donator for over 10 years.

Exactly. Good job Bill! [thumbup]

The lesson here is that you can't take it with you, so make the best of it after you get yours. Maybe it's not your idea, or my idea of the best way to do that, but it's his money and he get's to choose.

Two thoughts on it - whilst his charitable works should be applauded, he is also responsible for some VERY deplorable business practices and his company, M$, has been ripping it's users off for decades - from the initial DR-DOS/WINDOWS BS, the compulsory licencing up to their 85-90% PURE PROFIT on their software!

I suspect this is as much wanting people to think well of him as for actual need to donate!

Wow. Such a narrow view. This guy is setting up vaccines that could save people lives. How much is a life worth to you? I have been enjoying MS products for years, and I am thrilled to see the man who really did change many things in our lives giving to people who need it most. Would the world be better off if he worked at Burger King, and donated $10 here and there to the guy at Wal Mart around Christmas time? I don't understand the Microsoft hate, it's mostly from Linux noobs who don't understand that their hardware would not be advanced as it is without proper mainstream support.

If you take ignore the fact that he will have paid tax when he earned the money, and the amounts he gives away are astronomically more than his tax liability then I suppose you could argue that.
