I'm a fan of Tag Heuer. I think the build and style is excellent without being stupidly priced.

I dropped a few bills on a Tag Heuer for the girlfriend last year. She loves it. I don't wear a watch, and frankly don't really get it. My cell phone tells time, and that's good enough for me.

Sorry to be a mood killer, but what is the point of an expensive watch? surely as long as it tells the time any watch would do. or am I missing the point?
What's the point of having a 4-course dinner at Jean George for $300 with a $250 bottle of Chateau Margaux?

You could get the same calorie count with a McDonalds sandwich and a Coke.

A watch is one of a few jewelry items that a self-respecting man should wear. Watch, cufflinks, pen, pocketknife... and maybe a moneyclip/cigarette case/business card carrier. That's pretty much all men are allowed... the watch being the most common.

I wear a decent-looking Seiko automatic that cost me about $200. It's been worn to death over the past 10 years or so. It is coated steel, so the coating has worn off in places and the glass is chipped, scratched and cracked.

If I can afford it, I will replace it with a high end watch before I go for my interviews... partly for the same reason why I will wear a tailored DKNY suit, Bruno Magli shoes, and carry a Brooks Brothers briefcase... and partly because i can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that go into a fine timepiece. I will also appreciate having a sapphire-glass crystal that can't really be scratched, as well as a solid body with no coating, that's not going to rust or wear away.

It's the same reason why we don't all drive the cheapest car, or live in a box.

I've always had Timex watches, usually some variation on the "Ironman" series. My watch now is the Ironman iControl and its awesome. Yay digital!

I would like to get a "dressy" watch to wear on special occasions, but those are too few and far between to warrant the cost right now.

Well said, I agree 100%.

Also, has anyone ever seen a chronograph style watch, but in a rectangular shape? I've been looking for a good one for ages, but have never found anything.

You can wear a simple ring too, doesn't even have to be that expensive.

Most bodys wear, scratches are going to happen on Steel or Titanium casings. Only few manufacturers like Rado use ceramics which is more resistant. Hardness scale below:

They also make rectangular chronographs:

I only own one watch. Some random Bulova watch I got as a gift a while back. I guess I can understand wanting a nice looking watch if you're dressing up, but I'll never understand the people who buy a rolex. I mean sure I'd like one, but I'd never pay the price. Just like with sports cars I'd stick to something like a Lotus, or one of the other fair priced and well performing vehicles.

I've not worn a watch since I got a mobile phone. No need. I doubt I'd ever get one again - even if I was a millionaire.

I spend about 10 hours a day in latex gloves. I couldn't use my phone to tell time even if I wanted to.

Plus, my habit was too firmly established. I feel weird when I don't have a watch on my left wrist.

I use the watch probably no less than 100 times per day... and I keep it running within 5 seconds of the correct time. Luckily for me, my Seiko auto is the most precise watch I have ever seen, and only loses about 10 seconds a month... so I don't have to adjust it too often.

Where are you? But any decent Jewelers will be able to order one in for you to look at with no commitment to buy.
