IF the story is true then I'm with dangermoose. Good way to react. Walking away would have been stupid unless the guy had ten others with him.
I'd never start a fight, its just wrong and I havent come across a situation in which using your fists would have solved anything. But I've always answered violence with more violence. And I'd teach my children the same. |

Thing with bullies looking for a bit of bother is that if you leave them, they'll go looking for it somewhere else and that person may be badly hurt so, IMO, sometimes the right thing overall may be to take them out as hard as you can - especially if they're bigger than you! Violence is bad, even when you win you can lose - I've broken my hand three times, IIRC, in disputes, so I really try and avoid them now and getting old doesn't improve my odds. |

I was taught not to start a fight (though I have provoked one on occasion, TBH) but to make sure I finished it! Almost always I've been able to walk away but sometimes you can't. So am I a bad person? I dont know, but when I see guys starting a fight for no reason I get really angry, especially when the victim is smaller and weaker than the bully. |

I really am not. I have never seen the point of spending £100 on a night out just to get in a fight at the end of it. The trouble is that in the UK everyone drinks too much and a lot of people just can't handle the alcohol and want to give it the big I am. Many years ago the bars used to close at 6pm here, so blokes would go directly to the bars after work and drink as much as they could before going home (and often beating up the wives). Later, in the sixties, hours were extended but that drinking attitude continued and still does - except the bars can be open all night - so kids get sh*t faced on cheap grog as they're usually well paid and when they hit the streets they're often looking for trouble. Doesn't help that bottle stores (off licences) are springing up everywhere - especially in the more depressed areas - and are competing for selling cheap spirits and beers. So they get drunk even before hitting the bars and clubs. Fortunately, the Politicians have finally got the idea that most people are sick of it and are actually starting to do something about clearing out the drunks! I'm all for people going out and having a few drinks and a good time but not what some yobs get up to. Even when I was drinking a fair bit (usual tipple was a litre of Baileys, as it was a nice mellow drunk that didn't hit hard), I never could see the point in spending a load of hard earned money on getting so drunk I couldn't remember what I was doing, possible getting hurt, waking up God knows where and having to find my way home as I'd spent/lost all my money. |
