Hi guys.
I run 2 different 360's in my games room on my Samsung LEA656 LCD (one component 360 and one Elite with HDMI obviously) with no problems at all both displaying at 1080p. Anyway, tonight I decided to take the older component 360 downstairs to the lounge so the family could play Scene It! Bright Lights! Big Screen! However, when I hooked it up to my parents brand new all singing all dancing gorgeus Panasonic P46G10B plasma, we had audio but just a black screen on the display. Does this mean the Panny is unable to display 1080p throught the component cable? HDMI is fine because after that I took the Elite downstairs and tried that. I'm guessing the screen was black because the component was set to 1080p from upstairs on my Samsung, would this be a correct assumption? Rather odd how such an amazing brand new Plasma is unable to display 1080p over component wouldn't you say.. Thanks if you can shed some light on this one. |

It will output 1080p for the XMB and whatnot but BD movies will be 1080i. I watched the new startrek movie the other week http://www.qj.net/qjnet/playstation-...put-1080p.html ![]() |

Then the player swapped the resolution to 1080i. Also you have the extra signal conversions and no DVD upsacaling over component. /shrugs |

are you sure your not getting mixed up with "some TV's cannot support 1080p over component due to hardware constrictions" where as the PS3 supports it only when the TV IS compatible to do so ? |

well my telly must be flashing up the wrong resolution then displaying P instead of I
![]() I find it rather odd that it (as in all PS3's) display 1080p in games over component yet blue ray over component isn't possible because component is only supposed to support a max of 1080i ? bit weird that /farts |

anyway this brings us quite nicely back to the 1080p issue on the panny.
It could be a processor issue in the telly as "component" is supposed to be becoming obsolescent so perhaps Panasonic scrimped a little and put a cheaper "component input" processor that doesn't support 1080p seeing as HDMI is the preferred medium for connection these days as "all" BD players do not out put 1080p via Component (supposedly I bet they can but its been excluded for copyright reasons). try 1080i setting on the XB 360, failing that I have a hack that you can do on the Y connector that some telly's don't like a strong white signal which makes them go black because its out of range (thats a different issue though not resolution related its more cheap tv ic's and processors) |

It is best to run the 360 at 720p resolution since most games are rendered at or around that to reduce the amount of scaling and the TV having to deinterlace the signal.
As far as why they do not accept a 1080p signal over component, I can only assume that it is because that for the most part, it is unnecessary as really only the 360 is used at that resolution via component and the TV has 4 HDMI inputs. I had a Sony Bravia in my bedroom for a year or so and it did accept 1080p over component and then I replaced it with my current Panasonic plasma which is a far superior set in every regard but for whatever reason, it does not accept 1080p signals over component. I don't think it is a matter of skimping, just that there is very little need for support. |
