Any strange staining outside - may be a drain problem?
Any particular room or area you notice it?
Is there a sewage treatment plant in the area - under the right conditions the smell can travel for miles?
Checked your footwear?

Something could be dead and rotting, i had this problem in my old house found out that it was a rat rotting away and coming through the ceiling.

found out what it was.....

for some reason the local farmer did a spot of muck spreading late in the evening and the prevailing winds wafted it in my direction.
