Default Brain Controlling Flies "Zombify" Fire Ants
[shocked]

The egg develops into a maggot, which appears to control the ant's behavior. The maggot "directs" the ant to a moist, leafy place—phorid larvae are vulnerable to drying out—a safe distance from other fire ants.

The larva then eats the ant's brains, causes the ant's head to fall off, then finally "hatches" from the ant's hollowed-out head about 40 days later.

"Not only is it decapitating it, but it turns the ant into a zombie," said Sanford Porter, a research entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...nts-flies.html

And then you have this

The nematomorph hairworm Spinochordodes tellinii is a parasitic worm whose larvae develop in Orthopteran insects (grasshoppers and crickets). This parasite is able to influence its host's behavior: once the parasite is grown, it causes its grasshopper host to jump into water, where the grasshopper will likely drown. The parasite then leaves its host; the adult worm lives and reproduces in water.[2] That S. tellinii influences its host to actively seek water is not presently supported.[3] My worst fear of death is drowning[shocked]

I remember seeing something similar on Animal Planet about a fungus that infects ants. The spores are released onto ants, and it grows inside their head and gives them the urge to keep climbing upwards until they eventually die, then they showed a time lapse photography of the fungus growing out of the ant's head after it dies. Pretty crazy really.

Just imagine, in 50 years time with genetic engineering people will be able to develop biological weapons that do something similar to humans.

I think by using several infected caterpillars and some sort of endoscop to show different stadia.

And I am with you that it is pretty disturbing to watch and know such things are possible even tough on such a small scale.
