Default A bit of advice on a Blu-Ray player
Makro have got these in from tomorrow for £99 + vat and I'm just wondering if it's worth picking one up? I've got a 37" 37LG3000 which is not 1080p (1366x768) will I still be impressed?

I'm sure it will be better than playing a standard DVD, but don't expect great quality from a cheap player combined with a non-full HD TV.

LOL Chris, you sound like a Sony commercial! Theres nothing wrong with 720p sets, and that BD player doesnt seem bad, especially for the price. I'd still recommend getting a PS3 over any BD player as you know it will play all BD disks.

Ha ha, yeh, I do know what you mean but tbh I wasn't really thinking of getting a Blu ray palyer at all, just the Sky Hd (720p anyway), when I saw this though I thought It seems Ok for a branded player and wondered if anyone else had a Sharp.

Don't those LCD suffer from profound clouding and/or backlight bleed?

Honestly, the only BD player I would recommend over a PS3 is a Samsung BD player w/ Netflix support.

But if the OP doesn't have or want netflix, then the PS3 would be my #1 choice as well.

Go 4 it! But I agree that the PS3 is a nice option for the gamer and movie fan. I have a separate home theater (Yamah, Denon, Definitive Technology, B&W, and my SAMSUNG Blu-Ray 1500 (under $200) which plays anything and has not one issue, so I didn't spend a fortune and it looks amazing (full 1080p/24 frames) on my 42 inch LG 1080P 120hz. LCD is pretty amazing, but I have been in it for a while...like a very addictive hobby--lol---got another one---gaming and being a computer enthusiast!

The reviews look decent on that player but it is limited to Profile 1.1 and I am sure that you could find more capable players in the same price range.

You can find Sharps, Samsungs, and any LCD manufacturer that makes models that suffer the same issues which is why they all have a wide line of different models with differing performance.

This is the Bravia I have in my bedroom and while in the dark with nothing on the screen it certainly isn't pitch black by any means and you can see a hint of the backlight but it is not even remotely close to the model shown in that video.

Exactly, I had a 720p display for a few years and there was a significant difference between upscaled DVDs and Blu-rays. Panel quality and image processing make a much larger difference in image quality than raw pixel count. [yes]

Nothing wrong with a 720p panel on a 32-37" screen.

Saying HD content wont look great at that rez on a smaller screen is just wrong.

For £99 you haven't got any alernatives really, not got alot to lose.

Even with a light on in the room my LG looks amazing...very 3D and lifelike. The Samsung has had a couple of firmware updates, but that's it and I haven't ran into any Blu-Ray that has an issue, like what others have found with players priced considerably more and the load times are small, but the Samsung that I have was a nice buy at Christmas and now it is more.
I'm with MrBungle---when watching things--especially HD content---on a 32-36 inch the difference between 720p and 1080i/p is had to see.

But unless your using it as a computer monitor, I doubt you can tell the difference between 768p and 1080p on a 32 inch screen if you sit a reasonable distance away.

I have found the Samsung 1500 just an excellent player---I would buy another and will if they are available.

About the issue with 720,1080---once you get to a certain size Blu-Ray,DVD---upconvert or not---should look pretty stunning, not that 1080p isn't going to have it's +'s and even 720 would have it's +'s over conventional DVD.

But when you can get 1080P (full HD or TruHD) for amazing prices today--go for it.

And yes---people upgrade firmware. It really can help and improve playback. We do it for our optical drives and now a days it is very simple to do for Blu-Ray players as well.

I have a 37" LG full HD LCD and I can't see any difference worth mentioning between 720p and 1080p. It's just not a big enough screen.

IMO you need at least 50" before you can notice any difference from more than a couple of foot away.

Spend the extra £30 and get the 1500:

I have one and it's great. Annoyingly I paid £240 for it less than a year ago.

I'm noticing the difference already.

I used to have an old Toshiba ragazada 32" LCD 768p (lol)

and the samsung 32" 1080 I have, the picture quality is already a great Improvement even on standard SD signals

Higher concentration of Pixels on same size screen means better Image quality bud

Theoretically yes, but you have to sit VERY close to a 32" set to see any difference between 720p and 1080p.

I think you are noticing the better quality from the new screen, not the higher pixel count.

Have you tried dropping your blu-ray to 720p and seeing if you can see any distance from normal viewing position. I don't mean blue your eyeball to the screen surface to check for differences though.

isn't that a bit weird

I am thinking of getting a BR player and well a PS3 would have a bonus for me ,
but gaming would be errr for me
