Default Ingrown nail
I have an ingrown toe nail. I have had it for some time, and am now starting to take care of it. I have been able to pop out the nail using my Swiss knife, but once I pop the nail out, what do I do with it? Just let it be, trim it or what?

No way in hell I am going to a doc because it is going to hurt much more, and they will most likely take the whole nail off, when it isnt ingrown all that much. I thought that it was going to be much deeper than what it really is given how long I have ignored it.

Well, you can do what you did and sometimes that works... make sure you alcohol it to keep any infection away. When I was about 15, I had to go to the podiatrist to fix it. The toenail on my left, big toe is more narrow than the right, big toe now. The Dr. killed the roots on the sides and I've never had an ingrown toenail since.

I had a pretty badly ingrown toe nail a while back. Doc just sliced about 5mm of width all the way down one side of the nail, bandaged me up and all was good. Might have had some stitches, can't remember now, but it wasn't all that painful to have done at all.

Same here regarding having gone to the doc and had him kill part of the root of my toe nail to get rid of ingrown toe nails. The left i had it done on both sides and on my right foot it was done on the right side. Genetics screwed me over and untill i finally had it taken care of, i would get them all the time. I also though would grab a knife, and dig it out and then cut the nail so it wouldn't just grow back in right away and be all ingrown again.
As to the OP, going to the doc wont' cause you any more pain. They numb your toe before they do anything. I would give you this advise though, if they doc takes care of it like he did mine, you'll not want to watch. I watched myself as blood and needles don't bother me though, i know it would other people.

Yeah I watched the doc do it to me. Kinda of freaky to see him cut my toenail all the way down to the base and I couldn't feel a thing.

OP, go to the doctor. The only pain you feel is the tiny flexible needle they use to spread the numbing agent into your toe.

Whats weird about me, is I can inflict all the pain I want an me, cause all the blood to come out of me, and be totally fine with it, but if I go to a doctor and watch a doctor do it, I will pass out cold. But it is one of those panic, high blood pressure, this hurts kind of pass outs.

After what I do doesn't work, I guess I will end up going to the doc.

I had an ingrowing toenail once that was a persistant problem on the same foot for about 5 years, then one day in frustration I just ripped the whole nail out with a pair of pliers, and went to the doctors for advice. He refered me to the local hospital, where they applied some gunk with a cotton bud to the base of my toenail root to kill it off for good.

Now I'm happy to be the owner of a Toe that looks like a Nose.., no nail has re-grown for about 10 years, and it dosen't affect me in any way other than appearence, I can still play football, sports etc.

You did what??

Didn't that hurt like hell? Why didn't you go the doctor BEFORE you did something as drastic as that?

Well, I had 5 years worth of treatment from the quacks and nothing seemed to work for that long, it would always come and go.

When I get pissed off, I get pissed off....

Pain doesn't really bother me too much, but in this case, yes let's just say it hurt...a 'lot'...

No regrets looking back though, best home cure I ever did.

Yea, it is kinda weird watching the doc cut into my toe and then cut up my nail. But then the "man" in me kicked in and i was like "wow, this is freaking cool". It may sound weird, but i actually thought it was cool seeing it done and not having to feel a thing, but pressure on my foot. Not to mention seeing the huge needle being shoved in my toe. Guess you could say I'm a masochist of sorts.

Yeah, another vote for go to the doc. I used to get them bad and regularly. Best part of it was when the podiatrist went to aneasthitise my toe and pushed the needle in so hard it came out the other side of my toe. HE almost fainted lol. But it got the job done. In the long run it is so much less pain. Just do it.

My hammer toe tends to get them, but what I do is now I keep them a bit longer than the edge of my toe. This way, it doesn't allow it to grow inward anymore, so I make sure I don't clip it too short otherwise it will come back.
