Default Video encoding, playback question... MP2?
I have a home video I made back in 1992/1993. About 8 years ago, I converted the VHS tape to a digital video which created an MP2 file. I have the video now, but if I try to play it in Windows Media Player, it stutters badly. If I watch it with Media Player Classic, it plays nice and smooth just how it should.

I tried using Windows Movie Maker to convert the file type to see if that fixes the problem, but it didn't. I'm trying to upload the video to Youtube, but it never seems to complete the upload.

Anyways, I'm hoping someone has some ideas about what is going on with this and how I can maybe convert the file into something less finicky.

If you have the latest ffdshow codec package, most videos should play on your windows media player.

But, I would probably convert it to a different format.
I use this program to do video conversions (there are probably better software out there) but this hasn't failed on me yet..

You mean both audio and video are in a file with a .mp2 extension?

Try making a copy of the file and renaming the extension from .mp2 to .mpg

Don't work on the original.

If that does not work then you will want to do a direct stream copy for both audio and video in something like Mediacoder. You will want to save it with a .mpg extension.

Demuxing and then putting the audio and video back together would be the next option.

Re-encoding would be the last option, and might not work because the decoders that feed the encoder will probably encounter the same problem as WMP.

.mp2 is for mpeg audio only AFAIK.

The AVS Video Converter works perfectly at converting the file and playing it in Window Media Player without all the 'pauses'.

The only problem is, I don't want to spend $40.00 for the software that I'll likely only use once and the watermark in the middle is too in your face for me to be ok with it.

Have you tried mediacoder?

Sometimes there are free programs that do the job, sometimes better than paid options to be honest!

I downloaded mediacoder, but I cannot figure out how to make it work! It just keeps converting the file to MP3. I would like to convert it to mpg, or wma or something.

You could try what MonkeyPuncher suggested, by renaming the file to .mpg.

Tried it, doesn't work. The file still plays, but still stutters to bad to try watching.

Whatever the problem is, Media Player Classic plays the MP2 just fine... but it won't upload to youtube.
