More secure than at any other time in my life. Quite ironic considering when the market was "booming" I was in the **** financially. It was my fault for being in the **** bt spending beyond my means, which lead to my bank lending me money way, way beyond what I could afford. Now however my company are making good profits and about to move to premises in February and I am nearing a second promotion in a year. So I am sitting pretty and sticking two fingers up to the bank who contributed to my suffering while others were living the life of riley.

Not really concerned. It would be hard to make me redundant as I'm the only one who does the job. Nuclear isn't going anywhere.

My job security has fallen significantly, as of next week my company has cut everyones hours down to 40 a week. I was used to 60+ a week. All that overtime really came in great for the weekly paycheck. Now they are starting to talk about laying off some personnel.
Im lucky that Im in the department where layoffs have never occurred, but ppl in office levels and even some management are in danger.

All in all Im losing at most like 400 a week in take home pay.....sucks[thumbdown][cursing]

back to ramen noodles

As of now, I play in a few orchestras and do lots of gigs (Violinist). The orchestras that I play in aren't full time jobs though as I'm still a student (undergrad) but I am a bit concerned since a lot of money donated comes from big corporations.

The bad thing is that the arts/entertainment industry is always the first to feel the brunt. :-(

Yep and IT for big business. Our orchestra in Columbus had its funding cut months ago. What a shame; I'm not a musician but figure there are MANY other things that should go by the wayside before those guys! Hope things work out on your end.

I have excellent job security. Being in the military, limited deployments and staying out of trouble gives me the opportunity to save a lot of money without worrying about getting laid off [thumbup]

government money is never truly secure.
well I'm in the forces too and can safely say my jobs secure enough and I can vouch for him too somewhat as its cost the government/state a lot of money to train people like us for the jobs we do and it would be a waste of public money to start making people redundant plus I'm contracted in to do 9 years and 6 years reserve so unless I do something drastic that warrants me being dishonorably discharged I'm safe, what I'm talking about is hes idea of staying away from all the troubles I'm presuming hes in the American military

another thing too they would have to pay out on pensions early and offer large severance payouts if they started binning military personnel because of the current down turn.

the UK gov tried that last time, they gave out massive payments to personnel in the order of 80 k in some instances then after it was all said and done they realized that there wasn't enough people to go round so they started a new recrument drive wasting the money they were gonna save with the voluntary redundancies, and now they are offering personnel incentives to stay in because no new recruits are coming through and people are leaving because of the extra work loads thrust upon us since 2003[thumbup]

I'm a soldier in the United States Army and I plan to reenlist for another six years maybe more. The thought of staying 20 years and getting that retirement and pension sounds attractive.

I work for Cadbury & have been there almost 10 years. I feel fairly secure as I work on the distribution side but If I worked at one of our manufacturing plants I'd be worried. As of 2010 some of your favorite chocs will be made in Poland!

Turkish delight.
Mini Eggs.
Double Decker.
Frys creme.
Crunchie.
Etc........

Already Creme egg twisted, Milk tray, Brunch bars & eclaires are made there. Currently 50% of everything we make comes from abroad. A worrying trend :-(

I know what you mean. I work for the distribution side of Nestle, and quite a few import trailers are arriving now.

Everyone that I know who is in, or was in loved it.

Everyone who is currently in, are making tons of money right now. Way more then one would think. This was like at least 7 or 8 years ago was an E6 Military Police Active, and he said he was making $60k a year having fun, and doing what he loved. He was going to get shipped out, but then quit as he had a kid.
A friend right now in Reserve as an E4 and is making $1,500/mo for just 1 weekend of his time which isn't bad at all. $18k for just 24 days of his time without all the other staff that he might do.

He has been in for 3 years as well, and in Jan. might get shipped to Afghanistan.
Things are getting pretty safe right now, and Iraq is only going to get smaller in terms of troop numbers. Iraq wants us out by 2012, and I actually think that we have signed agreements. As well, Obama won't sign anything that keeps them their longer. Afghan will see a troop increase over the next two years, but will still be 3 times less then what is currently in Iraq.
As far as security, it is great. Military is ALWAYS going to be good for job security. It doesn't matter how poor the country is, Military is it. There are many countries that you can look at and see, like N.Korea, Russia, Iraq, ect. ect. In some places it may not be the safest job, but it is the only job that you can get that puts food on the table for the family.

I still am not sure if I am going to, but with my further options, I just might have to join up. Pays ok, and ok benefits for reserve. Signing bonus's are getting nuts as well. Plus, I can get retirement in 20 years, so when I am 40 years old I could say that I am retired. Start out as an E3 in the Air NG which would be nice. Start out higher then everyone else, cause those who have a 4-Year would be Officer training.
