I've got a 05 Jazz with like 51k miles on the clock. Service was done at about 49k miles.
Anyway, I've just started to notice a whining noise coming from the left side of the bonnet. The whining noise isn't high pitched, it's more of a low pitched whine sorta like a washing machine on super slow or something like an RX7's wankle engine and is only really heard when I'm in 1st gear. I can hear it a bit in 2nd gear but any gears after that it disappears. I've stuck it in neutral and revved the engine and I can't hear the whine, so I don't think it can be internal engine related/alternator. I'm starting to wonder whether it's gearbox related? |

It is real hard to pinpoint a car issue by a sound described from a owner. It could be a bearing, brake pad, rotor, cv-axle from that area. Now if you aren't real sure the sound can be coming from another area and you just think it is from that side. Best thing to do is jack it up, place some jack stands under it get a friend and try to pinpoint the location. If it is transmission related, sounds like a release bearing or a pilot bearing going out. You can tell by how hard it is to put into gear by a simple check.... First gear to reverse, back and forth , etc. Good Day |

No problems shifting whatsoever. Well i would try to get someone to help pinpoint the sound then, as it is real hard to do it while inside the car as it couldbe coming from anywhere. As road noise will make it sound like it is from somewhere else. Good luck , hope you get it sorted out. If by chance it is a wheel bearing and front wheel drive , you will have to remove the whole knuckle and have the bearings pressed in by a machine though if that what it comes down to. Good Day |

From the description, there's a good chance it may be gearbox related - depending on the design, there're two or three shafts, each supported by at least two bearings. The gear train is usually designed with the gears going from one end to the other and so if the noise is worst in 1st, a little less in second and not noticed in third, it would suggest a gearing may be going at that end.
First thing I would do is check the gearbox oil level - this should have been done as part of the service but, with many "mechanics" lately, you can't depend on it! |

I thought wheel bearings made a grinding noise and not a whining noise? |

Just come back from garage.
Was told that it's a minor gearbox problem but it's all internal and I was told I shouldn't worry too much about it. I asked him if I was to get it fixed, how much would it cost and he said about £1000-£1200. I'm gonna get a 2nd opinion with a mechanic I know back at home when I get the chance but for now, doesn't seem to be too bothersome. Gearbox in general seems to be operating as normal, just the sound really. |
