Default Weird Car noise, plus strange idleing
Ok, so, I am wondering what this is.

Under acceleration, or load on the engine (up hills, or at high speeds) in the Ford Escort 2.0L, it seems like the engine is making a rapid clicking noise. It just started recently and am not sure what it is. Any clues as to what it could be?

Also, my brother is having an issue with his S10. Basically, a couple of days ago, his car would idle around 2,000rpm and stay there. Then a few days later it would idle normal, but then go back and forth from idle to 1,200rpm. It only does this kind of stuff in neutral. It is fine in drive, but when he shifts the truck lunges, and he said that he can put the truck in third gear, take his foot of the gas, and the truck can drive itself.

I told him to check his throttle body, as I think that it might be getting stuck, but anyone have any insight as to what else this could be? He has the 2.2L I4.

Without hearing it I would have to guess a bad/sticking/stuck lifter in the escort. And in the truck no idea, your suggestion sounds like a good place to start though, maybe a bad throttle position sensor. Might want to have him check it out.

So yeah, just got done messing with the Escort.

Inside the cabin it sounds like a rapid clicking noise, but in the engine bay, it sounds a little more like a rapid clatter sound. Sounds like it is coming from the far left piston.

sticky tappets/lifters in the escort?

When was the oil last changed?

As for your brothers truck... could be the air idle control valve getting clogged with carbon.

I changed the oil exactly 3,000 miles ago. I use Castrol GTX with Fram filters. I checked the oil today, and it looks like it has another 2,000 miles or so left on it. Still pretty clean.

I only use the High Mileage or the Anti-Sludge from Castrol, always 10w-30. Been that way since 130,000 miles when we bought it.

haha, funny you should say that. i had a buddy whose truck was making weird clicking noises and we could not figure it out for the life of us, he brought it into the mechanic and everything and they couldn't find a single problem...took a few days before we realized there was a big stone stuck in the tire. [stupid]
