What I think is frankly amazing in the UK is that motorway driving is not a required part of your test (or at least it was not when I took my test - which was 14 years ago, maybe things have changed now?) Still the same, motorway driving is part of the Pass Plus test.

I think what should be taught to all learner drivers, and in some cases branded on their behinds, is that when you drive on the motorway the fact that there are 3 lanes does not mean you have a free choice of which one you want to drive in. The number of times I've come across some twit in a Ford KA (because that's what they always drive) toodling down the outside lane at 60mph.....

uh.
Guess you don't have huge signs warning you of speed camera's in the distance then?
We have signs saying speed cameras are about all over the place... but most of the lie to trick us in to thinking there might be one round the next corner etc! lol

The first time I drove on a motorway was 2 months after passing my test, and I was in my bosses car. Needless to say I was bricking it, and drove like a granny on the inside lane [rofl]
Yeah... I did pass plus, which is an optional extra, should be mandatory.

Teaches motorway driving and night driving... didn't even get an insurance discount either... grrrr

Yes we have them signs to without actual camera's, but from what I've been told they are for police who may be stations nearby with speed radars or something so the signs are warning you in case there might be a cop with speed radar nearby whether there be one or not.

A similar system was proposed here in SA, not sure if its actually used yet though.

Anyway, my issue with these systems is that they dont catch the real speeders. The bulk of the people caught are doing barely over the 10% limit (i think its 5% here). Whereas the real speeders have all these jammers and speed trap finding GPS systems and they can often avoid fines and still manage to drive like aholes.

Its sort of like copy protection on games, it doesnt really stop the people out to do the crime, they will find ways around ever more complex systems whereas the rest of us have to deal with the increased burdens of those same systems.

And lastly, i also believe that cars like M3s/M5s/AMGs etc should not be road legal cars. 90% of the owners of these type of performance orientated cars speed on public roads. Personally i think these cars should be fitted with something like that Nissan GTR has, a limiter that deactivates on designated areas (tracks, autobahns etc). I see NO reason for a car to need to travel faster than 130-140KM/H (87MpH) on public roads.
IF its an emergency there can be an overide system that bypasses it and notifies police/emergency services and maybe forces emergency lights on (like somebody suggested already, a great idea IMO).

Sure its about money, but then again you could argue that people who speed are preventing taxes from being increased.

If everyone stopped speeding tomorrow, then councils would need to get that money from somewhere else, which would most likely mean rates increases etc.
yeah, that or they could cut spending and do things more efficiently.

As for the speed cameras, I dread the day these things become widespread in the US. There's something about Big Brother watching your every move. What's next? realtime gov. access to the blackbox in your car plus gps so anytime you do something wrong they can fine you in real time?

Speed cameras are just starting to come online in the US, but it's only a matter of time before they're as widespread in EU. I'd love to see some kind of reasonable limits put in place though.
