Default Ever tried to recharge single-use Alkaline\Manganese batteries?
I once tried recharging some alkaline batteries in my NiCd\NiMH battery charger. One went pop (there was no loud bang or explosion) and leaked battery fluid into my charger. It was a chore cleaning that up.[no]

I'm pretty sure that's why put the big 'NOT TO BE RECHARGED' on the packaging.

all depends what the cathode is.and if it gets eroded in the discharge process.

if its not one of those types you can actually recharge them, but you trickle charge them

Ive known that for years

You can get special chargers that will recharge normal batteries.

I remember seeing commercials for those years ago. I think we even used to have a charger for our Ni-Cd batteries that claimed to be able to charge alkalines. Strangely, I haven't seen them offered in years. I just assumed the companies who made them were sued back into the stone age.[surrender]

I feel like "the battery" (the AA ones) is one of those things that have existed for way too long.
I mean everything goes along with time but batteries are still as crap as they used to be

edit:
The AA battery type was standardized by ANSI in 1947 [thumbdown]

Ive always recharged my remote control batterys when theve stopped working by putting them on my central heating radiators, the heat sorts them out and they can last for months till the remotes stop working again.

Midlands (BBC) - July 23rd, 2008

A large explosion has destroyed a house and killed the occupants in the Midlands this afternoon. Fire Marshall Bill describes the explosion as, "The result of attempting to recharge a battery on a heater." More to come as information is released. ...oh my. Do they get quite hot?

Agreed. I bet battery companies could do a lot better but if they started selling longer lasting batteries they would lose profits. It's kind of like the whole light bulb thing, we have light bulbs that don't burn out but companies aren't interested in the technology because it would lead to their demises.

You must know something I don't then. Care to elaborate? If you are referring to fluorescent bulbs (ie. bulbs that use photon-emitting phosphors and toxic mercury gas) or CFL's (compact fluorescent lamps) you can buy those as much as you want. If you are referring to LED's (light-emitting diodes) which use P-N junctions to create light as electrons fall into electron holes and release photons, they aren't at high enough lumen levels and cost prohibitive toward use in residential lighting. Why do you think full LED lamps are only avaliable on cars like the Audi R8? For the price, tungsten filament bulbs are still the light source of choice.

I love it how people always assume a manufacturer of a consumable is doing something conspirative to ensure the market keeps using its products. As far as ANSI standards are concerned, they are a godsend for manufacturers AND the consumers alike. Could you imagine what kind of **** storm we would be in if every manufacturer sold their own type of battery for their own product?
