Default need a Bicycle Helmet... suggestions, recommendations?
So some dude at the bike trails today was really giving me a hard time about not having a bike helmet and saying the cops are always out there and that the tickets are $250 bucks and blah blah blah. I was like, whatever dude, sissies wear helmets but that just got him more agitated. I guess he was like the bike trail boss or something, but I rode anyway. Very fun time through some very thick woods, creek beds, fields, over rocks, fallen trees, etc.

Anyways, I decided maybe I should get a helmet... everyone else had one. It's not that I never wreck because I usually wreck at least once on every ride. So far, I don't see how a helmet will save my elbows and knees and whatever, but the law is the law.

So anyone have any suggestions? It is about 100 degrees today, so obviously I want a helmet that is very COOOOOL and light weight. Also, one that matches my bike, I think. How do I know what size? I don't like wearing hats.... ever.

Anyways, this is my bike. Any helmet suggestions?

You have to wear a helmet if you're on a trail? Here you just need one if you're riding on the road and you're under 18, I think.
I don't even know where my helmet is. I haven't worn the thing in years. I probably should get one, but I haven't been riding lately. Too many bears in the woods and not enough time/energy with my summer internship.

Either way, if you're looking for a helmet I would suggest going to a bike shop and not buying online. The ones around here have decent prices, and they'll help you get the best one for your needs.

I don't know what you should get or what your price range is but I wholeheartedly recommend a helmet.

It only takes one pop on the noggin to kill you or leave you a vegetable. You could hit a root or a stump or slip off a rock or anything like that riding on a trail and fall into a tree or onto a rock or anything. Even a small strike could leave you concussed, bleeding, etc. When I used to ride my mountain bike, I made good use of two helmets.

If you want the best ventilation in the biz, Catlike is probably the way go to but be prepared to pay. The Kompact and Whisper are crazy but they're more road-geared. Aside from that, you cannot go wrong with any of the big brands like Specialized, Giro, Bell, etc. Get yourself a helmet that's molded in the shell. It'll be lighter and have larger vents while retaining its overall strength.

More important than anything is correct fit and proper adjustment. If you've never done it before, get it done for you at a shop. If you wear a helmet incorrectly it could do nothing to help you or even cause more damage in an impact.

Well, usually injuries to your elbows and knees aren't life threatening.

Very fun time through some very thick woods, creek beds, fields, over rocks, fallen trees, etc. I could be wrong but the last time I checked crash studies show that trees and rocks usually come off better than heads.

Speaking as somebody who got knocked off a road bike and flipped at 30mph, I'm quite glad that it was the helmet that hit the road first and not my skull.

I would recommend going to a specialist bike shop and speaking to somebody and trying them on.

My thoughts exactly. Helmets are quite stylish and functional these days. No reason not to have one.

So erm,why does what your bike look like dictate what style of helmet you get.

or was it just a ploy to show of ur bike.

anyway nice to see u keep ur trials bike superdy clean (or is it brand spankers) cos mines covered in mud.

also you are very stupid if you dont wear a helmet on trials especially in woodland cos you can quite easily smash our head open and if your on yer own thats it your fooked

I hate bike helmets too, but figured that I better get one as I like my brains where they are, i.e. in my head and not all over the road!

So with that in mind (pardon the pun), And not wanting to look like a total spaz in one of these Space cadet type things...

I bought a rather cool looking Tony Hawks skateboarding helmet...

Which I'm sure offers the same protection as one of those stupid looking bike helmets, But its also light, has good ventilation and is comfortable and I don't end up looking like some complete **** on a bike.

Thanks for all the tips and info. I was very surprised at how expensive some of them can be. After comparing all the prices at the bike store and comparing ventilation and size, I ended up with a Specialized helmet.

This one (also has removable visor):

I prefer the look of the proper cycling helmets myself. If any of them look "spazy" when you're on a bike it's the one you bought...imho.

To the OP, glad you're moving out of the idiot stage and preparing for the inevitable serious crash .
A five foot fall can fracture your skull (happened to a friend) and at speed the damage can be a lot worse.
Personally, I'd be looking to see if a full face version is available - even a light car of cycle race helmet as I've seen and heard of some VERY nasty facial injuries from cycle crashes.
Heck, a friend who was a demon downhill rider used full motorcross gear - but then he was a totally committed to speed kinda guy.
