Ok, so we got digital voice service through Comcast. They came by and gave us a new modem. Did my bandwidth test and went from 8Mb download 256Kb upload to 25Mb download and 2.3Mb upload!!! That is with a ping of 42 from Chicago of all places!
Atlanta which is way closer pinged 140 but still scored me 22/1.8. I am so freaking excited!!! Seems like they are really speeding up their cable services so that they have something to fight with once the Electric company starts offering Fiber to the Home. They have been lying down Fiber like crazy around these parts lately. |

Comcast has always been pretty decent when it comes to their quality of service. Time Warner, on the other hand.. ROFL. Powerboost is really nice. When you want to download a small sized file its damn near instant. Hefty webpages with flash and graphics blaze along too. For the long downloads (linux distros, WoW patches) it'll slow back down. Only beef I have with Comcast is their P2P throttling. I'd prefer to see throtting done on number of connections rather than the type of connection, but aren't they supposed to be moving to a protocol agnostic throttling system?
I've got Embarq DSL. 10/840. Always get my rated speed. Wish I hadn't moved to Ohio... the town I left in Indiana was getting fiber'd up for FIOS. ![]() I tried Time Warner once. It was slower than a dialup modem. They also sent me to collections 10 days after I terminated my service. The funny part was I didn't owe them anything, they owed ME money for the 30 day money back guarantee. And those (insert long string of explitives here) DRILLED THROUGH THE SIDE OF MY HOUSE. I told them through the basement! the basement! Freaking morons! I should have drilled through the idiot's kneecaps. |

I really don't see any slow down with comcast on torrents. For example, pickup the ubuntu 8.04 image, and through vuze a bunch of other sponsored torrents and I typically can see an average combined download exceeding 1.5mbyte/s, which works out to about 12mbit/s, my rated line speed. I see bursts as high as 35mbit while on powerboost, which is supposed to be for the first 25mb of file.

To bad comcast is screwing with p2p downloads........... legal or otherwise. It's Powerboost, I have it too. It gives you a big speed boost for the first little bit of a download or upload. If you download something big, it will slow down and your sustained speed will be whatever you're paying for. It's pretty cool but it realy screws up speed tests. |

On the 8MB package, the powerboost only advertise to 12mb max. Plus, my speeds have been pretty sustainable so far. Not nearly as high as what the speed test showed me, but well over 8MB. ![]() |

Just make sure that you are able to download from people who encrypt and you will never notice a speed change. Edit: Ok I guess my speedtest did change a little ![]() ![]() |

Oh snap! Officially 2Mb now? That is freaking awesome. I did not notice that they upgraded that. What about the 6MB tier? Is that still 384Kb? That is the tier that we have, though I would not be surprised if we got a "free" upgrade. The Comcast guys, by the time they get out this far are pretty lazy.
I think that our old Modem was holding the speed back. It was about 4 years old or so. For a while we were getting new power adapters that increased our speed, but that soon stopped even with speed upgrades. Now we got VOIP through Comcast thus a new modem. |
