Default Anyone have an iPod Touch 8 16 32?
I've been interested in one of these recently. Being in Canada, we don't get Apple iPhone until like Summer 2008 but I need something to tide me over. What do you guys think of Apple's iPod Touch series?

Is there a better mobile wi-fi device that's around the same size for similar price with the same quality? I used my friends iphone in the states a while back and was very impressed.

If any of you have one of these I'd love to hear how you like/dislike them if at all

I have a Touch 32gb. Probably one of my favorite gadgets ever. It makes checking my email and/or websites so much easier while I'm sitting on the toilet.[thumbup]

I have a 16GB version. Rarely use the WiFi/Net, just use it as a music player when out and about. I do a fair bit of walking so it comes in useful. Great easy to use interface, but if you're like me you'll find yourself forever cleaning the face to get rid of smudges or fingerprints.

Got a 16GB here. Only had it for over two weeks so far, but the impressions? It's like a gadget out of the future. It's so good. The Wi-Fi just works flawlessly and the whole interface is very easy and simple to use - just how Apple products should be. Definately the best iPod ever - even if the capacity is lacking a bit, but flash memory is quickly improving. However as good as it is, would I have it in a phone? 'fraid not for several reasons.

Only downside i've had with it so far is the fact the software can go a little buggy sometimes. Twice it has reset itself automatically without warning while playing music, but it's been fine over the last week. Running 1.1.4 here (not bothered about jailbreaking it TBH).

I can't believe you would buy a Touch when you guys will have the phone within 1 to 3 months! Hold off and buy my phone! It's an 8Gig first gen so it only has EDGE data but if you can get by with hotspots, ~120kbps data speed, and just using it mainly as an iPod and phone then this would be a way to get a really cheap one without having to deal with contracts. If the second gen goes on sale with no discount I'm selling mine for $250 USD (about $50 cheaper then the iPod TOUCH and half the price of the current iPhone) and if it does go on discount (rumored to be $199 with two year contract for the low end model) I'll price mine at $150 since it'll be contract free. Mine is almost perfect condition, not a mark on the screen or back and works totally fine, never hacked.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I can't believe I lived without an iPhone, I just use it so much! The iPod touch/phone has got to be the best mp3 player and i suspect apps will work fine on the touch too which could just open it up to so many cool things. You have to get one but if you hold out you might be able to get a rocking deal from me! PM me if interested!

As impressive as the ipod touch is, I simply wouldn't bother with the iPhone. I'd very much rather use the K800i i'm still using for a few reasons: Better camera (even to this day, i'm suprised by the quality of photos I can take with it wherever) with proper flash; 3G; removeable battery (I don't mind it not being removeable in an MP3 player, but a phone is different as the capacity of my K800i battery has decreased a little over 1 year of ownership due to aging of the battery) and, while the last point is general preferance, I couldn't imagine using a touchscreen for texting and i'm already too familiar with texting on a Sony Ericsson.

Don't get me wrong about Apple products - I think they're beautifully engineered, but I think it works better as an iPod, as I think there are better phone alternatives.

The interface on the Touch makes it the absolute best MP3 player I can imagine (and I've owned 3 different brands of MP3 players in the past, including Creative). Finding the music you want to play is totally intuitive and simple. The touch screen combined with Apple's interface is a combination that can't be beat.

And Acarney, some of us buy the Touch because we DON'T WANT A PHONE. [cursing]

Oh ya, I totally didn't mean to imply you needed the phone part but it kind of sounded like he wanted the phone too but the wait was killing him. I just thought getting a deal of an iphone for less then the cost of a touch might make the wait worth while. Still, if you're just getting an mp3 player the touch is amazing! You'll be very happy!

I have an Ipod Touch 8GB that I got for Christmas from my wife. We are currently travelling through Australia/New Zealand/Indonesia and prices on the Ipods were higher than back home, so she could only afford to get me the 8GB. Apart from only having the 8GB model, I LOVE this device, I seriously use it every single day. I got this sweet case for it that is silicone and lets you wind the earphone cable into it so its all in one tight package. The wifi is amazing, I honestly think YouTube videos load on this thing faster than on my laptop. I get by with the smallish 8GB size by using diligent data management, but I can easily fit 3 days worth of music and 3 or 4 feature length films on it.

That being said there are some issues, I cannot for the life of me get pictures to transfer to it properly with windows vista (I am not the only one with this problem), either 3/4 of the pics I want to transfer won't make it, or else the pics end up all garbled, which sucks b/c being a photo viewer is one of its greatest features. Battery life is acceptable for a screen this size, but some people complain that its too short.

Another annoying issue I have come across is Apple trying to sell me updates for this device for features it should have had from the beginning. It gets the usual firmware updates, but all of a sudden iTunes is advertising a bunch more features for only $24.99.... kinda crap if you ask me.

There is a website, which I can't recall the name of right now, where they totally dismantled an iPod Touch and found chips on the circuit board resembling bluetooth modules, they could not confirm whether they were or were not blue tooth chips, but if they were there, and Apple disabled them, that would really blow as you could possibly use wireless headsets with it or something.

I will keep this device until the iPhone comes to Canada, then I will definately get an iPhone, unless something more impressive comes out by then....

Couldn't have said it any better.

I'm afraid you do have to use iTunes. However despite what people have said about it, it's easy to use after a few uses. Just add the files to the library, then sync it - job done. However unless your music files don't contain the artist or album information, then the library will look messed up. If you've ripped music from CDs from WMP, then it'll leave that information intact so iTunes organises it all appropriately. Everytime you connect an ipod to a PC which it has never been connected to before, it'll ask you whether you want to keep the files on the ipod or wipe it, so no, it won't wipe everything on it unless you want it to. Done this a couple of times with my Cousin's PC before (we use a program called iDump if we ever want to copy music off each others ipod) and never lost anything.

The update price is to kind of put a gap between the iPhone and the Touch. Since Apple is getting kick backs from the service plans and the phone wasn't discounted and had a much higher price for basically the same hardware as the Touch Apple added in this "support" plan with new apps being built and released for it. The apps will run on the hardware so the ones they can offer to the touch (apps that don't need cell features) they will but charge a price. Firmware like you said is free, they support what you bought and make it better and fix bugs but adding new apps and features you DIDN'T plan to have when you bought it comes with a cost. Some hate it, some kind of understand the business model, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that's the reasoning behind it.

The iPhone offer is good for you too! You probably could sell the touch for the same price as what I would charge for my iPhone if you want to buy it within a month or two and can live with EDGE data.
