How was he to know it wasn't? It seems to be a fairly standard issue grenade, regardless.
standard issue for who? the guy that got killed or the guy that threw it?

yawn

well scoobs, your reply offended me greatly. however, im not angry with you. even if i were, well, this is a place, much like my country, ( or yours) with a mix of people , opinions etc. Now, im sure the person throwing the grenade, also had teh time frame figured out, as well as the chance of teh enemy throwing it back. im thinking, this guy saw the grenade, said S**T ! ! ! ! ! ! GRENADE ! ! ! ! and dove. truly a first class hero. in my book

OK so I am coping a bit of flack for my opinion it seems that some of you think that because I am a moderator I am not entitled to an opinion. Let me clarify some. The fact is that this is a war zone and he and his comrades signed up of their own volition and they know the risks. You can not in anyway compare this situation to someone pushing a child out of the way of a bus. I can understand people doing that because the child is innocent and didn't ask to put in that situation and I'd like to think that if I was in that situation I'd try my hardest to help. His comrades are very lucky to have had him as a member of their unit there is no doubt as they are still alive. Thankfully I will never be put into that position. Is this guy a hero? Yes he is, but that doesn't mean he wasn't silly for doing what he did when he could possibly still be alive. I am pretty much on the same page as Golem.
Yes but when you have what, 4 or less seconds to decide. Not to mention the human reaction to even START to think takes about a second, so that leaves 3 or less seconds to decide. Than you have to think of a million different ways of how to do this. This is IMPOSSIBLE to do within the time given so you pretty much have to choose the quickest "choice" of how to save your comrades. You really only have a split second to decide considering you have the remaining 1-2 seconds to actually react and do it.

I really can't see what he did to be silly. Please tell me what you would have done? Risk your life to save your comrades, or risk your life and still have your comrades die? Theres really only 2 options in this situation. I for sure know which one I would have chosen if I was in his situation.

This is a perfect explanation of someone who's profession is a network administrator as opposed to a soldier. How the hell do you know what is "silly" or not in a combat situation. Please, next time keep your comments to yourself

No; apparently in some moron's opinions, it is a stupid thing to do. Of course, such desktop commandos know how are so well qualified to speak on just how they should deal with with a live weapon in a combat situation; must be all that scary linux experience.

...

One thing people forget, when they keep talking about throwing it back, is just how deadly an airborne grenade actually is. In the air, not only is the blast wave not impeded, but the shrapnel is able to blast a 360 degree area. So, if he had thrown it, he would still be dead, but so would he squad mates.

Also, keep in mind that any trained soilder knows to "cook" his grenades, just so they can't get thrown back. After letting the spoon fly, you hold it for a few more seconds (depending on the fuse), THEN throw it. By the time the enemy gets it, its only got a second to go.

Ah well.. i will quietly wait for my ban now...[thumbdown]
