Default Got a job offer...better pay...but...
Ok so Ive been job hunting for the past week or so and I finally got a job offer from an Oil company. The pay is better than my current one. The thing is, its one of those jobs where ya start at the bottom....I mean diggin holes for wells and dealing with pipes n ****...and maybe some TNT

But they said they would only have me at that position for 6 months (yea right). After 6 months ill get promoted to a different spot and an increase in pay and not too physically demanding as well. It starts at 52K and once I move "up" it jumps to 70K. The part I sorta dont like is the 2weeks on and 1 week off.

Right now I have a highly physical job as a shipper at a large furniture company so the physical part I guess I could handle.

Anyways, has anyone here ever worked on a rig b4? What are your thoughts?

ive heard that guys that work on the rigs go 12 hours a day worling and then go straight to sleeep. and then on thier time off, they either do drugs (cos there is nothing else to do ) or go home.

it would be ******* hard work. and then ******* boring when you werent working.

well it beats my current job where I have to wake up at 4am to be at work at 5am and literally get off work at 7pm only to drive home 30 minutes makin it 7:30pm and ONLY havin enuff time to have a light dinner and 10 minutes of family guy. Ohh and turning my head to see my clock strike 8:30pm and head for bed where I turn on transformers the movie and fall asleep 5 minutes into it...thus makin 4am come all too soon only to make it feel like I left work 5 minutes ago and I already have to go back to an extremely demanding job with a boss whos got a godlike complex and thinks everyone in the world sux but him!!

whats my next move?

p.s. Im always doing something when Im not at work, so time off work WOULD NEVER be boring for me!!

I'd say GO FOR IT!
You should check witht he company, but they'll often fly you to and from your home town between shifts, as well.
Heck, a couple of years back - before the rotator cuffs stuffed up - I'd be after that job myself...
One caveat, though, you may have a bit of a hard time at first as they're often tough guys who'll try finding out what sort of person you are.

GO FOR IT! and remember this but stick it out just the same:

Personally for me that does not sound like a good job. Anything involving physical labor is a no-no for me. I prefer to work indoor in a nice desk and use my brains. Not saying you don't use your brains outdoors, but it's a different part of the brain, if you get my drift. Plus the idea of working with TNT is not worth the risk for me, even if they paid me $200k/year. BUT, if that is your kind of thing, then go for it!

I should think unless your planning to use TNT in the same way that a suicide bomber would, then you'd surely need a lot of Brains to know what the hell your doing.

Its not just light the fuse and run, like in the cartoons. [rofl]

That just implanted a funny image into my head. [rofl][rofl]

To be honest, it doesn't sound like that bad of a job. It sounds pretty cool if anything. Although it'd be hard work, I'm sure the experience would be good.

My girlfriends dad works on an oil rig in the North Sea, he's be doing it for around 20 years now and I'd have to say there are some serious pros and cons... The wages are very very good, he's pulling around £50k a year, not including overtime which comes at £200 a day. The 22 year old trainees there have just been given full wages, putting down mortgages etc...

However the work can be very hard, especially with the night shifts. Her dad currently does 2 weeks on 3 weeks off which is sweet, but it takes around 2 or 3 days to come back down and then 2 or 3 days to pysch up for work again. He finds himself only sleeping around 4 hours a night when he's away, so spends alot of the trip home sleeping to catch up. It hits hard on family life too, in the first 16 years of my gf's life her dad saw her for 3 christmasses, missed numerous birthdays and has basically only seen her for 12 years of her 24 year life, its a big strain on her mum. It's quite sad to look at photos with the quote 'Rachel's 4th Christmas - on the phone to Dad' with a sweet little girl looking so chuffed that shes telling her daddy what santa brought her...

So, highly recommended for the wage side of things, especially if you're prepared for some serious hard work - there's no going home to relax after a tough 12 hours shift... But not so good when you've got a family around, maybe not the best long-term career out there...

Uff! Sounds like an even more reason not to take the job. Yes, money is important and it's nice to be making a lot, but when you don't have time to spend it or enjoy it, then what's the point? Plus working that hard and damaging your body with few hours of sleep is not worth it, unless you happen to have to support a family or you really enjoy that kind of lifestyle.

with 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off I pretty sure I could enjoy the $$

The $$ Im makin now I really cant enjoy cause i work 70+ hours a week so that makes the weekends very short.
With 2 weeks off I could travel somewhat, Im single no kids and rent an apt...so i have plenty of time for myself

I'd say go for it then, I know my gf's dad had a wicked time when he started out, he has some awesome stories about the guys he worked with and what they'd get up. But definately save up some cash so you can get out again in the future, not a family man career imo.
