Default Looking for a new used car (oxymoron!?)
Hey there guys,

So this lady ran a red light and smashed into my 98 Grand Am GT. Well that is now totaled so I am in the market for a new car!

I was reading consumer reports and they recommend a Nissan Maxima, they said they are long lasting and well built. I was just curious if anyone can either support or refute this claim by them?

I found a couple of good deals on a few of them, just waiting for some contact information back from them. One of them only has 78K miles on it which isn't bad but most of them seem to be 100k or above...is that too much?

Also, anyone possibly know anything else that is a good used car to get? My budget is absolutely 6grand tops!

They aren't long lasting if a lady runs a red light and smashes into them ...Sorry.

I found a couple of good deals on a few of them, just waiting for some contact information back from them. One of them only has 78K miles on it which isn't bad but most of them seem to be 100k or above...is that too much?
I could be wrong but isn't 75K supposed to be the area where certain things start to fail and need replacing like the transmission? In which case you may find buying a car with over 100K is better as it's already had that work done on it, at 78K maybe someone's trying to pass the buck.

Just curious - how did you manage to make an engine last that long?

250k is remarkable. [thumbup]

Buy a civic and never look back. My 1999 has never had any major problems.

when I sold her she was in near showroom condition not a spot of rust.

mighty impressive for a 14 yo car

I think she was a one off.

still see her driving around.

I think it was closer to 230k actually but heh still impressive eh

plus she was a turbo diesil

My 98 sunfire has 180k miles on it and runs great. AC needs fixed as the compressor is dying, but other than that nothing wrong with it. Sure beats the 2001 Celica that died at 43k miles.

Why not finance a car? Get a hyundai or something. If you can get a decent Nissan for $6k and you aren't willing to finance you might as well, but I think you could do better by putting part of that as a down payment and getting a loan.

Still impressive nevertheless.

If there is anything to add though, I find diesel engines might last a bit longer than normal petrol engines. Correct me if i'm wrong though, but I usually see plenty of high mileage diesel cars than there are petrol ones.

true they are lower revving so less long term stress and damage i would guess

seen a few petrol engines go that long, seen a mk2 gti ibiza with 220k on the clock. my ibiza has done 92k nearly

Could also be because the engine is built like a tank to withstand high compression (22:1) with a turbo on top of that.

To tell you the truth as long as you maintain your car properly, it's gonna last. I've had a sunfire ( pain in the ass ) but still got 280k out of it.

The least amount of maintenance required were/are 90' integra which I pushed to the limits day after day ( ~460k on it when it was stolen ). I've got a 98 integra and a 93 civic(330k before new engine was put in ) . I love these because they're so easy to work on.

They're getting a little pricey I noticed but they hold their value well.

Also, it might be better sometimes to get the car thats got 100+ k on it, if anything ever went wrong with it, it would be changed. Nissans have great engines bad body ( rusting very easily ). Always try and get a receipt of what was changed in the car.

I can vouch for the above. Those Hondas don't die.

Similarly, all my Corollas and Camrys made it 175k without a hitch. My camry wagon at just over 300k (still running strong for the dude that bought it).
