Default Create a website for charity?
This is basically a plea for someone to help redesign and recreate a webpage for Emerge, Inc, the company that employees me.

I work for a non-profit organization providing residential and vocational services to adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. This organization is located in Maryland, USA which is known for its lack of funding to services providing support to individuals with disabilities.

The organization I work for has not received an increase in funding for inflation for the past 3 years. Its annual budget is close to $20 million and because it has not received inflationary increases in funding, the organization is looking at a $500,000 shortfall this year. This shortfall is almost all related to increases in the cost of heating homes, electricity (the state deregulated the price of the monopoly provider so prices doubled this year), gasoline for vehicles and even food price increases. This shortfall is not because of unfunded increases in salaries since salaries aren't being increased and people are being laid off, resulting in poor services for the people we are serving. The administrative costs are only about 10 per cent of the total budget which is rather outstanding for a charity of this type.

What I am attempting to convey is the fact that the company doesn't have the money to purchase a new site. The current one was designed by the CEO during his free time using a web page creator. The site is obviously utter crap and needs to be reworked. It should look as professional as the company is. Emerge is one of the leading service providers to people with disabilities in the state of Maryland.

If there is anyone who is at all interested please send me a PM. If you know anyone who might be interested or could do it as a school project for their portfolio, please send them the link to this page. If a true professional is willing to step up and do the work for cheap, I may be able to talk to my boss about getting some kind of funds for the website.

Now I'm off to learn Microsoft Access so I can try to completely redesign and recreate their database system, which was also designed and created by the CEO during his free time. Anyone know of any good Access tutorials? [surrender]

It is really creepy that I think it is a whole lot better than many sites I've get to see.

The site doesn't look bad at all. I'd help out if I had web design or database skills, but I don't.

Sorry to hear about your company getting its funding cut. I work with federal and state funds and we got our funds cut.

I don't think you're much in to politics are you? We didn't get our funding cut. They simply didn't give us inflationary increases in funding which means prices have increased but we still have the same amount of money so we can't buy as many good or services. It's COMPLETELY different than cutting our funding so that we can't buy as many good or services.

They actually just shut down a institution called Rosewood because the conditions there were just so deplorable. NOT! Well the conditions were that deplorable, but that's not why they closed it down. That's just what their press releases say. It cost the government almost $200,000 per year per person in these institutions so it wants to put these people in non-profit residential programs in the community where it funds the program as little as $45,000 per person per year. I just do I.T. for our work so I have no idea of the politics and bureaucracy that goes around at my work. As long as I get my paycheck then I know is still well.

That's too bad that they didn't match with the price increases. At least you are still making it work. It's places that are able to make it work during tougher times that survive.

Have you considered a content management system like joomla? There are many themes that you can use which will do most of the work for you.

They have been around since 1976 which means this organization has been built on survivors. We will hopefully make it through this round of economic recessions/depressions as well.

I have not considered something like this quite yet. The reason being is that the CEO used some website creator which ended in the monstrosity you now see, so I sort of wrote them all off. I will take a look into this one. I'm definitely not an artist or designer of any sort but if this program is recommended by a person as esteemed as you, I will definitely take a look.
