I use 'hiren boot cd' for those, lot's off dos and mini win98 options. You can make one yourself though there http://www.gamebeat.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1057

There must be more guides around though.

BartPE is what Hiren is based off of, I think. Anyway, it's an excellent program and guide, as well as fully customizable. Plus, you get the benefit of being able to (properly) access NTFS partitions, including write access if you need (WinXP based).

I remember that I used a small fat16 partition on one off my hdd's to hold rom files which I downloaded under windows but wanted to flash with the boot cd. But only because I didn't want to load any ntfs drivers also included. The less things in memory/active the less things can screw up a flash.

Hiren includes more then BartPE, BartPE is however nicer is you want to integrate other programs on the disk yourself.
