Default Fair Use Policy
Hi all,

Just got a letter today from Orange saying they have suspended my broadband account because of "unusually high" bandwidth, which i think is a bit strange as i have an 8meg Unlimited option,

Are there any ISP's that don't have a fair usage policy?

Unless they actually say so then no, most cheap ass / free services have some sort of FUP but have alook over here...

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php (you'll have to check some of the top isp's for details)

By the way how much did you DL/UL to get your account suspended? i know Orange's FUP is 40gb (50gb is you wanna try your luck)

I'm with Wanadoo/Orange here in Holland (18mb connection). I think I've probably put 2-6gb down it a day for the last 6 months, - never had an email or anything from them about it.

well the first time was like 76GB but then the next letter i got was 46GB, but to be honest it really didn't seem like I downloaded that much, although i must have, i mean whats the point of a lightningly fast connection if you can't download that much?? thanks for the link i'll have a look.

right well i have decided to sign up for Sky 16 meg line for £10 per month, it says unlimited but still has a fair usage policy, so i think I am just going to try to download things off peak, (not sure if it will make much difference) let's hope they don't kick me off this one!

Do most other countries have fair usage policies? In the US I have never heard of any ISP having a fair usage policy, granted for Broadband your options are slim in the way of ISPs.

I find Virgin/NTL fair use policy the best, they only seem to complain if you are regularly hit 500gb a month. My monthly usage is around 150gb, used to be around 60gb when I first joined. Been with former NTL now Virgin for over 4yrs and I have never had a download issue

Their customer support me be bloody useless but their internet service is brilliant, only ever been down 4 times in 4yrs and that's only lasted around 1hr [thumbup]

Hmmm, WTF do they think "unlimited" means?
Have a good read through your contract and, I would suggest, write to them, informing them you're laying a complaint with (the relevant) consumers group for false advertising - better yet, have a lawyer draft the letter - if you can afford it.

If there is a policy of limiting the download, them they cannot advertise it as unlimited - nice and simple case, IMO.

Unlimited is an outdated term from the dial up days.

It basically means unlimited time connected to the internet. As in, you don't have to pay per minute.

All ISP's will have some kind of Fair Use policy built into their Terms & Conditions and rightly so.
For some unknown reason people think that their £20 - £25 per month should get them some sort of amazing connection, with unlimited downloads, sustained fast transfers....

When you're pulling in 100GB+ per month you are effecting other users - you are on a 50:1 contention and as long as you're doing constant downloading others are suffering.
That is why ISP's have FUP.
They know full well that even if you make a few legal music downloads a month, maybe a Linux distribution a month and a brand new games demo every other day you shouldn't be downloading anything near the FUP limit - so what does that leave?

If you want no FUP then move to a more commercial service - you get what you pay for.
A 20:1 Business classconnection gets you a better FUP.
A 1:1 Leased line does get you true unlimited...but you pay for it.

I do agree, although the last 2 months i have been just over 40GB, which is only just over a gigabyte a day! which isn't much these days if you are watching a lot of online video and gaming ect. The "unlimited" option is actually referring to the bandwidth (at least here in the UK) not a dial up connection, so really it is NOT unlimited is it?
