I wished I had the 4.3L. Instead I get stuck with the crap 2.8L V6. Thinking about dropping in a 4.8L V8 or the 4.2L I6, both vortec and super duper cheap.

Those things can be tons of fun, and be pimped out off-roading style.

Nice rig. My friend had an S10 blazer with the crummy 2.7 (or 2.8L) engine and it got TERRIBLE mileage because you basically had to floor it to go anywhere. People with the same car actually got better mileage with the larger engine.

American gallon are slightly smaller than imperial (UK) gallons as a result of the US altering things for better metric compatibility.

It would equal roughly 23mpg in UK terms, which is still very poor.

Good lord.... I hazard a guess that my A3 1.8T has better BHP and better MPG! Crazy Americans with your sodding great litre engines!

Well certainly going to cost you a bomb to keep it running (petrol wise) but with such a big engine you should get a lot more mileage out of it before it gives up.

I like how in the UK your first car is something like a 1.0.1.2/1.4 XXXXX yet in America they have 4.3l mobile homes. [rofl]

One day they'll learn hoew to use 4.3litres efficiently though and put some decent BHP out [rofl]

146k miles, quite alot for a petrol engine tho.

I don't get it. I like the sound of some meaty American engines but why on earth do some of them sound as if they're about to keel over and die? And yet the majority of Americans who would hear the engine and say "that is an awesome sounding engine"

The motor if taken care of will last a long time. I traded in a 1996 blazer with the same motor , had 253,000 miles on it. Still ran strong, no bearing knock, and didn't use any oil. If yours has the towing package it can tow up to 5000lbs.
They are bad on ball joints. When they go out, spend the $ and get OEM parts, not NAPA, etc. If the 4x4 ever gives you trouble, check the actuator under the battery tray. The boot tends to dry rot over time.

I had a 1993 S-10 before the blazer. Had the 4.3 ( non vortec though.) Bearings went out at 165,000 but I ran it hard, towed a boat, hauled lots of stuff etc.

Both ran great in the snow, never got stuck. [thumbup]

146k miles, quite alot for a petrol engine tho. Maybe for the cars over there? That is not that high mileage in the States.

Something like that but it's a bit more noticeable. It's like the engine is spluttering and coughing and seems to have like an uneven idle.

It was a cold motor and it doesn't have a choke on the carb.

yeah thast because it cams are so aggresive that when at idle the engine IS almost going to die, thats a sweet Nova btw. I have to educate my Uk friends here, yes its a 4.3 litre engine that is relitavly "ineffeicent" being around 200hp, what you dont understand is that it's a truck it has like 290ft pounds of torque so it can pull and haul things. Big engines are cheap to make so they are made mostly for the torque. They could make a 400 hp 4.3 litre if they wanted, but it would cost alot more to produce and people don't need it. As for the gas mileage, ALL trucks get bad mileage big engine+torque+gearing=bad mileage. also 146k miles? thats not alot at all for a gas engine, my car has about 140k, I see cars up to 300k all the time

But the point still kind of stands when you consider that the majority of people who own trucks don't actually use them to haul things.

congrats! Although i would not have chosen such a huge and high mile engine but if its in good condition you got a good deal! My civic when i bought it had 89k miles.
My first car was 1.xL Daewoo Lanos Sport! 19k miles 2 years old 2900 lol
It was totalled with temp tags.. some jerk rammed me into oncomming traffic at a red light... i was waiting for the red light to turn green then bam pushed into traffic. then I got a 1.6L Civic EX which got stolen on temp tags :P
Anyway now i have 2.3L DISI Turbo > 267hp/280tq 4 banger! With the same mpg as your truck! If i drive agressive i get 19-20mpg in my car and if i drive as smooth as possible its around 22.5-24mpg

Now that i think about it the miles on your truck is good for its age so never mind! Good purchase.

Just looked on wikipedia and considering it's a 4.3, it produces 150-165bhp.

It's such a shame diesel is not more common in the United States thanks to emission regulations.

You could have a 2.4 litre Turbo diesel in that truck putting out more torque than the 4.3 V6 and still getting 40mpg while cruising past the 250,000 mile mark.

1 thing you guys have to realize is that the 4.3L vortec is an engine that is almost 30 years old and essentially unchanged except for added fuel injection. furthermore, the 4.3L was basically created by chopping 2 cylinders off there even older 350. the engine cannot be compared to modern engines.

why was chevy still putting old hunks of iron in there trucks up until 2002? well because there cheap. and i suppose its "tried tested and true"

my truck is a 3.4L with about 185hp and 20 mpg. im gonna kill this motor then swap in the 3.0L turbo diesel that was never offered in north america [rolleyes]
