I just finished watching the 2nd Gig of Ghost in the Shell and Im confused as to what the hell happened...So they stop the plot...kill gota...and then all the sudden they are wearing the same outfits they are from the first movie?
Also where the hell did the fuchikoma or however it is spelled come from? And why were they just siting around doing nothing? Thanks for any explanation you guys can give. |

The ending scene is a few months in the future I believe. The Fuchikoma are replacements for the Tachikoma who sacrificed themselves to destroy the incoming nuclear missile (they rammed the satellite holding their AI into it).
Why they're wearing those suits I have no idea. I think they're sitting around because they're waiting to be "officially" reinstated as Section 9; previously they were operating under the table, so to speak. |

Which movie? The original Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence? Or the Solid State Society movie? So if the original takes place way before the SAC series...that means Major rejoined Section 9 and got her body back and such? (I haven't seen Innocence or Solid State Society so no spoilers!) |

Stand alone complex is an alternative 'universe' as Togusa is a rookie in the movies, but a veteran by the Solid State Society. You can't compare the time lines between the two any more. Well are you sure about that though? Because the end of the 2nd GIG I swear they look just like they do from the first movie...same armor and everything... Say which one follows the manga exactly? |

Shirow doesn't really do Manga like that, there's no serialisation of Ghost in the Shell. He did a follow up called Man Machine Interface but it's storyline doesn't intersect Innocence.
Masamune Shirow created the main ghost in the shell concept and characters, and must have had input for the Stand Alone Complex. But in Japan he's like Stephen King is in the US, he writes what he will and rarely does work directly for TV or Cinema. Togusa doesn't really actually mess up, it's just that of the entire team he's the only real police officer. So he thinks differently from the rest of them, Kusanagi picked him because of how he thinks. I've seen Solid State Society. Believe me when I say Kusanagi, Batou and Togusa have moved too far from their original character states for them to fit into the original roles they had in the movie. It may have started out as a kind of prequel the characters have developed too far for them to be the same. |
