I don't understand how anyone could put up with a pierced tongue. Surely it must collect food, become as annoying as hell and how do you even speak properly?

Doesn't affect my speech at all. The only food that interferes with it are certain types of bubble gum that can stick to it. I definitely don't find it annoying either. I'm the kinda person who loves to chew on pencaps and stuff. I guess I'm easily entertained.
