well with my Australian bank card, i can withdraw money from a canadian ATM but i cant see how much i have left in my account, apart from using internet banking.

what i do is try and take out the most amount of money possible (usually 500) and if it wont let me i try 450, 400 etc, because on every transaction there is a 10$ international fee (plus the currency conversion, so i lose money on that aswell)

my card has that maestro symbol too, and its not a credit card.

hope that helps.

I don't think that there is a way to check the balance of an account unless you have a bank account in that currency. I know I couldn't check my account details at an ATM when I was overseas. I guess you could go to a bank and they'd be able to tell you. I just use internet banking.

I have a VISA debt card BTW.

My wife's got a British bank account or two and I'm pretty sure she could never find a way to check her balance. Never signed up for internet banking either, so she had to rely on her mother back in England (who's co-signed to the account) to check for her.

I seem to recall her having to ask her mother how much money was in the account before going to draw some out, because if she took too much the account would be overdrawn.

When I go to the USA and withdraw funds it tells me how much i have in the bank in USD even though my account is in canadian, think it just uses the current exchange rate and estimates my balance in USD.

doubt it.... HSBC introduced admin fees to all accounts @ £10 a year and on top of that will charge you upto 3 lots of £25 a MONTH in paid-referall fees if you go overdrawn without a prior arrangement.

I'd keep it under your hat
