Nice thread I am looking also for a new car for the same amount of money about $5000 to replace my POS 1997 Ford Escort
I was looking for the 2002-2003 Mitsubishi Galant...seems to fit nicely in the price range with low mileage and good looking car too
I have a friend with that generation Galant and they are very nice cars. She hasn't complained about it once and loves it to death. She is also one of those people were if something goes wrong you get ride of it and never buy from that company again for as long as you live.
If I were in the market for a Galant, I would try to find one (96-06) with the 2.5L V6 Twin-Turbo. Can't beat 280hp / 268ft.-lbs of torque. [thumbup]

My self, I have also be eye balling the Mazda Millenia S. It has a Miller Cycle 2.3L Supercharged V6. 210hp / 210ft.-lbs torque. It was on the Wards 10 best engine list for 3 years. It has 40hp more then the 2.5L V6 and it have better rated fuel economy also which is pretty neat. The Miller Cycle is supposed to a bit better efficiency compared to all the other motors that are out there even when under forced air induction. Plus you should be able to get quiet a bit more power out of it too.

EPA Ratings
Old = 20/28
New = 17/25
The 2.5L has 1mpg less on the hwy miles on both old and new.
