i hope so - an initial success will mean that more of the movies come out (planned trilogy)

So, who here will be lining up to see this movie opening night, instead of playing with fireworks? [thumbup]

Could be another mega-budget Independance Day style **** up.

Trailer does look good though.

I'm honestly blown away. I just saw the trailer myself at Shrek 3.

The special effects are astounding. They actually look like they are not CG... I've never seen that. They totally blew by the uncanny valley with this... of course, I haven't seen the dreaded lips of Optimus Prime, but still...

And holy mother of god they have the SOUND. When they transform. It's still there. I think I nearly wet myself when I heard that.

All through Shrek 3 it was like:

Girlfriend: hahaha, oh Uwasa (well, Mike), that was funny
Uwasa: yeah, that was SO FRIGGIN COOL THAT THEY HAVE THE SOUND! eer eer ee ur urn!

Girlfriend: oh, hoho, that was awesome how they painfully forced the Immigrant's Song into the movie at an arbitrary location and ruined the building humor and made Led Zepplin look bad at the same time.
Uwasa: Yeah, thats almost as awesome as the transformer sound! eer eer ee ur urn!

Girlfriend: Wow, that was a cute movie, it was great how they used John Cleese, probably one of the funniest and most talented actors of our time, for one long, lame, painfully forced death scene that was about as funny as getting my eyes stabbed out! What part did you like?
Uwasa: Dude, remember that part where Optimus all rolls up on those guys and then he transforms and it DOES THE SOUND? DUUUDE! EER EER EE UR URN!
Girlfriend: You're walking home.

Nah, he just doesnt like cheesy "gf and me" posts.

Anyway, I'd like to know whats so special about that trailer? Doesnt maker the movie look any more for me, and I'm still pissed that the robots look so much different from what they are supposed to look like.

I will still go watch it in the cinema though, just to see whether its able to bring back some memories.

Well, I know they were selling senses of humor back K-mart for half off the other day. Not implying anything.

When I first heard about the new look, I was pretty angry too... but seriously.. think about it. Think what the G-1 Optimus Prime would look like running around the city. It would look like a giant CG plastic toy.

I love G-1. I grew up with the stuff. But if you just think about it, this is the only way it's going to look remotely natural. They're almost believable now.

True, they could have gone the BETTER route and made another cartoon, but I'm trying to remain optimistic. It looks like they really do want to make the fans happy as best as they can. They ARE taking a lot of history and condensing it into two hours. It's not easy.

We'll just have to wait and see. Here's to hope.

Well, I have seen many fan made pictures of Optimus Prime and the others, and they looked very cool even though alot closer to what they looked like in the 80s. I mean come on, it isnt either bulky toy looking robots or this. There are many designs in between that would have been better, more reminiscent of the orginal designs.

And, most importantly, two things have been designed horribly wrong for the movie: One: Optimus Prime is a flat nose truck, and Bumble Bee has to be a VW Beetle. Okay, they could have made him a New Beetle, but definately not a Dodge.

The thing I look at though is that it doesn't matter if Optimus Prime is a flat-nose truck or a Pipe Organ, as long as they nail the characters and deliver a good story, that's ok.

Heck, how many times did the transformers change appearance through the different generations?

I admit, Bumblebee looks odd as a Camero, but he doesn't look bad.

There are a lot of things they could have done, but I think this is going to look the most believable.

Just trying to be optimistic, mostly because nothing we can do can change what is going to appear on July 4th.

Actually, VW said he could NOT be a beetle. You gotta understand, that not every company wants their brands depicted in certain way in movies. This is certainly not the first time a company said no of course - just one of the most obvious.

I will look for the link later, but recently, there was an interview posted on Yahoo, with two screenwriters (IIRC) for the movie; listening to them really was a reassurance - they were fans, and did want to stick to the original. According to them, Bay had no problem with this either.

You sure? Because they have a yellow VW bug in the movie... it's parked right beside Bumblebee when Spike buys him.

I thought it was Bay's decision to distance himself from a Herbie-like image.

Thats what Wikipedia has about it too. And why would VW not have a car in the movie? I mean they didnt object to Bumble Bee being a VW Beetle in the first place back in the 80s.

And what I also dont like is that they're trying to make the Autobots look so bad ass. They arent. Actually the vehicles (flat nose truck, VW beetle) describe their characters very well, Bumble Bee was always the human loving, "cute" Transformer. Now look at him. In order to make the kids of the 21st century like him he has to be bad ass looking. And Optimus Prime? He was the workhorse, the honest straight fighter and leader. Now he looks just as "evil" as Megatron.

Yeah, looked it up.. i am wrong.. my bad.

Either way, i don't see the changes being bad. Yeah, it is a bit different from what we know; but some things don't have to stay exact to still be enjoyable...[thumbup]

The point is, Bumble Bee was a Herbie like character in the cartoon series, right? And we loved it that way.

You're both right.

From the IMDb:
Bumblebee's classic alternate mode was a Volkswagen Beetle, but this was changed to a Camaro. This was because Michael Bay wanted to avoid comparisons with Herbie the Love Bug. Volkswagen has also refused all requests by Hasbro for permission to use the Beetle, or any vehicle, for Transformers, the former not wishing for their products to be associated with war, real or imagined.
