Default Global cooling by 2020
To top off all the controversy of Global warming and carbon emissions. a recent report says by 2020 the sun will enter a lower output phase and the earth will experience low temperatures.

I did a course on all this through the Physics dept. Was very interesting!
While it is true, the change in output is ridiculously small. It would be unlikely to see a change by more then a few tenths of a degree (Celsius).

There are some people saying that the earth has been heating up because the sun is in a high heat output phase. I forgot exactly what my teacher said, but that was a long the lines. They are thinking this because Mars' temperature has gone up 2 degrees on average since those robots have been there, and that is roughly the same as the earths increase in temperature.

If Mars is going through the same thing we are, you can really only look at the sun.
Its near impossible to truely predict weather, weather changes, changes in the earth, galaxy, other planets, ect. ect. All we can really do is cut back emissions, make the earth green again, plant some trees and hoping that is the problem, and wait to see if anything changes, slows down, or stops.

You have to think about precession, too. We reach full precession in 2012. during extreme precession as we are in right now, the sun is higher overhead in the mid-latitudes, which of course leads to higher temps.

great point. not sure why some human caused global warming fanatics aren't broad thinking enough to comprehend things like precession (amongst others) and it's effects on long term world climate change. There are loads of good scientific studies on precession and the waxing and waning of the ice ages, ect..

Strictly speaking, you're actually thinking of obliquity (the angle of inclination), as precession affects axial direction in space. Although obliquity does have a direct influence of global temperatures, the 40,000-odd year cycle means that implied changes are far slower than the rate of measured temp changes. Besides, nutation has a quicker period (around 20 years) and we don't bounce through global warming cycles every 2 decades.

There's nothing actually special about 2012 and precession, other than what pseudo-science and conspiracy websites will tell you. There's no "maximum" or "extreme" precession taking place during that time, other than that during the winter solstice of that year will roughly be in the same plane as the Milky Way (which, according to some people, portends great unrest and much nashing of teeth). It's worth remembering though that this will happen on 2011 and 2013 too... and 2010... and 2009... and right now in fact.
