Default Any way to tell a (UK) mobile provider by the prefix of a mobile phone number?
We seem to be having problems with corrupt/delayed text messages from one of our friends and as she seems to be somewhat clueless as to who her mobile service provider is (), I was wondering if it's possible to determine the provider by the first 5 digits (prefix) of the number?

The prefix in question is: 07840

My thinking is that if I can find out which service she is using, it might be a good starting point to tracking down what exactly the problem is.

Tell her to go into network settings, select provider and see which ones are blocked out.

Aha, thank you Wibbler. My google skills failed me today

Tell her to go into network settings, select provider and see which ones are blocked out.
Not sure that'll help because the problem isn't that text messages never get through at all, it's an intermittent thing; sometimes they get through instantly, sometimes they get delayed by 24 hours, sometimes they never get delivered at all and sometimes the messages get through but are unreadable/corrupt. It's all very confusing

Thanks for your input anyway, sionyboy [thumbup]

How can she not know?

It's either written across her mobile phone screen as most mobiles show the service provider there as default.

Of course, if the number has ever been ported it could be with any network...

I would, but she lives 100+ miles away and we haven't seen her for almost a year.

Not really, no

On a serious note, googling doesn't seem to show up any known issues between the o2 network and our Virgin phones. Unfortunately, we don't know anybody else with an o2 phone so we can't test it out with somebody else. I suppose we could get in touch with Virgin and see what they think, but the chances of getting Mrs Dopey with the o2 phone to get in touch with her provider are slim to none. Most frustrating [cursing]
