Default Screenshot Problems
Ok, so I'm watching Ghost Busters (the very first DVD I ever purchased) and noticed a scene I'd like to take a screenshot of. I tried using Fraps, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working at all. I downloaded SnagIt trial, and it screenshots the same as if I used Windows and pressed Print Screen.

Why is it so hard to take screenshots of a paused video?

Anyways, I need to get this because I could swear that you can see Sigourney Weaver's nipple in one scene. Of all the times I've seen this movie, never had I noticed it before.

If you're using hardware overlay to display your video, then it takes some special software to grab it; I've never bothered to download those pay-to-use software, but luckily there are a few workarounds. Here are just three:

1) Enable VMR in your video card driver if possible. Since I use an nVidia video card, I downloaded NVTweak, and checked the "Video Mixing Renderer" checkbox. That way, videos are rendered as a 2D or 3D surface in DirectX, and not as a video overlay. Another good point to using VMR is that videos use the same "color space" as my desktop and so I don't have to mess with video overlay color settings (which have always been a pain to me). Go to step 4) if succesful, else go to step 2)

2) If you can't or don't want to do 1), go to Windows Media Player -> Tools -> Options -> Performance (click Advanced button) -> Check "Use Video Mixing Renderer" and uncheck "Use Overlay." Go to Step 4) if succesful, else go to step 3)

3) If 1) and 2) are not possible for whatever reason, turn your video acceleration slider down in the display options to minimum, and video overlay should be disabled. Go to Step 4)

4) Hit PrintScreen and you should be able to paste the screenshot in your photo editor of choice!

EDIT: If you're too lazy to do ANY of the above, and you're just trying to grab DVD screens (the above works for any video types), then download the trial version of PowerDVD which comes with a built-in grab screen option.

If you don't want to change any settings, the cheap and easy way is to open up a second media player window and place it behind what you are watching. Haven't tried it in years though.

I just confirmed that Ghost Busters is PG too! A pm has been sent... but don't get your hopes up too much.
