I am trying to think of a common problem where a novel solution was used, or, more simply, a problem any individual may have or a business or group or anything of the like where a novel solution was put into place.

I cannot think of one for a small organization or for the US but here is an international example...

Instead of using gas power hot water heaters in Africa, many nations use solar power water heaters or have large water containers outside in plastic cylinder sitting up very high so the sun will warm the water all day. There is basically no maintenance cost and no cost to heat the water.
