Default iPod problems...
Hey guys/gals, my sister is having a lot of trouble with her iPod nano (yes, the one the dog chewed up).

Anyway, when she goes to hook it up to her PC, it doesn't get detected -- at all. It doesn't even start charging when it's connected. Windows doesn't detect it as a mass storage device or anything; it's like nothing is plugged in.

Other USB devices work just fine. I've tried two different iPod USB cables as well with no improvement. I've tried reinstalling iTunes, resetting the iPod, etc. -- nothing works.

Any ideas?

I'd appreciate useful responses, thanks. I don't have any tolerance for that kind of crap.

It's a peice of ****. Get another one.

Or get something else. Seeing as you can't RMA it... Not really much you can do. If it's not being read at all (and you know what you're doing), chances are it's more than anything you'll be able to fix. I know when mine f'd up awhile ago and iTunes couldn't read it, but the computer atleast knew it was there. What I did was use an HP utility to flash usb sticks, then iTunes finally detected it and i had the program restore the device back to normal.

His suggestion is probably as good an answer you'll get.
My 3rd Gen went wrong and no ammount of tomfoolery would fix it.

It is in all respects a big fat chopstick, or a bum spanker because it's quite sizeable.

I see.

Well, that pretty much seals the deal on me ever buying any more Apple products. [rolleyes]

Fortunately I won mine in a competition which I entered illegally pretending to be under 14.
Karma sucks.

I can understand your frustration but I don't think it should be towards Apple, more towards the dog that destroyed it by chewing the area by the connector. From what I can tell the connection is damaged beyond use to it isn't making a solid connection.

We repaired that -- it wasn't real damage, rather cosmetic only. It functions fine.

But what say you to this: this unit in question actually *isn't* the one the dog chewed on -- it's a brand new one. The one the dog chewed was never used on this computer. So yeah, I'm gonna blame it on Apple 100%.

Yes, the new one is the one that's not being detected by the computer.

The "chewed" (and now new-looking) one is not having the issue.

So couldn't you just exchange it for a new one?

Erm... dunno? I think this one was ordered off of Newegg, and I didn't buy it for her (hence why I thought it was the other one).

Newegg used to be excellent with RMA's, especially exchanges. I think it is 30 days, but get on the horn with them Monday. Just tell them what you have told us, and I have no doubt that they will take care of you. [thumbup]
