you all act like thats unheard of...

Most 42" plasma's are that resolution. The pixels are rectangular shaped, but are actually denser than 50" models with the normal 720p resolution. There is no difference in image quality.

I dont thnk he was acting like it was unheard of- more like acting like the resolution sucks for that size of a screen regardless of it being common with plasmas or not. Congrats on the purchase, if you decided to choose it it will probably serve you well so disregard others negative comments unless you too are apprehensive and remorseful about the purchase.

Not at all, ive done alot of research, and I mean ALOT. Ive had my eye on various LCD's 1080P and 720P as well as DLP's and other plasma's. To my eyes, plasma's (the better ones Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung ect...) provide a better picture even when put against the 1080P LCD's that cost two or three times as much. There is no denying the beauty of a good plasma. Way to much emphasis is put on 1080P. Unless you have upwards of a 50" screen size or going to be using it as a computer monitor its just not worth the extra money. Although there are some other "advantages" of 1080P besides just the high resolution. Im on a budget and this TV fits me perfect. [yes]

I have the HD-DVD add on for the 360 and just ordered Directv HD, so I will post lots of pictures once I receive it.

1024x768 on a 42" model are not rectangular pixels. as far as i have read on some hifi forums (avsforums) the pixels are only rectangular on 50" models.

Resolution isn't the only thing that makes good picture quality.

Anyways thats a nice display and a really great price. Pansonic plasmas have great pic quality imo. Maybe not the best but dam good for the money.

I think you got a great buy on a TV that you will get alot of enjoyment out of. And the free 5 year warranty is a huge bonus.

What good is having the latest monster sized tech with bells and whistles that you cant even take advantage of yet if it pinches your budget and lifestyle in other areas.

Enjoy your purchase.

1024x768?
Can someone explain this to me? 1024x768 on a wide screen display, how does this work and how does it interpret HD content? I saw TVs listed like this in Currys I assumed it was a typo.

Well, they talk about rectangle shaped pixels, so I assume that plays a part... but I don't know...

Congrats on your buy.

When I was considering getting a HDTV before Christmas, I didn't really consider plasmas because I thought they were yesterdays tec. But that changed when I went into a store that has the TVs set up properly so you can compare them (not just set them all to 100% contrast). There was no escaping the fact that the plasmas looked better than most of the LCDs there, especially for SD content (since most channels are still SD, it is what I will mainly be using the TV for).

yes since they are not rectangular and the screen is rescaling the picture anyways there is no problem.

regarding the 42" with rectangular pixels he probably got a hitachi or something

I have a 42" panasonic plasma as well (600U). The picture is great. Just remember to tone down the "picture" setting for the first 100 hours or so for break-in. Don't listen to anyone who thinks 1024 x 768 is a sucky resolution. They obviously haven't seen ESPN-HD in 720p at that resolution. It honestly looks better than perfect. I feel like it's a better, more crisp image than my own eyes would show if I were standing there in person. 1080i looks good too, but not as good as 720p. That's just my opinion though. Also, I don't think the "progressive" aspect of 720p really does much. I think it's the fact that it's the screen's natural resolution that makes it looks so good.

we have a 42" hitachi at home and its a 1024X1024 panel so i'm guessing they must be rectangular... the screen certainly isnt square!!
