It's a Pontiac 350 or 400

Evsltkzl 01-04-2007 03:17 PM

Awesome[thumbup]

I was told on another forum it was either a pontiac 400 or 455http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/cool1.gif

So i know its probably at least a pontiac 400[shocked]

So would i be better off sticking the pontiac engine in my truck (engine bit the dust) and dropping a Corvette LT1 engine in its place or having the motor rebuilt to leave in the firebird?http://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif

thanks for the responseshttp://discussworldissues.com/forums...ies/blush1.gif

Most likely to be a Pontiac 350 or 400 as said before. I doubt its a Ram Air III or IV. And most definitely not a super duty 455.

Its a pontiac block, it won't make power stock as the heads have terrible flow. Parts are also harder to find for a Pontiac block than a Chevy BB.

If you are unlucky its going to be a 326ci block.

Evsltkzl 01-04-2007 03:31 PM

So you're saying if i want performance... go with the corvette enginehttp://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif

He's probably correct but some of the Pontiac combinations can offer a shed load of torque and power with relatively minor work - such as replacing a very low lift cam' with a good street one and some headers.
In your position, I'd at least pull the engine and check what I actually have and see what my options were. The Chev' is almost certainly the correct option but it'd be nice to have a killer Pontiac mill in a Pontiac car[thumbup]

What I'm trying to say is that if it isn't a Ram Air model engine, or at least one with decent heads, the price of getting the decent pontiac heads and parts to make it produce power is quite alot.

If not concerned with originality a LS1 or LT1 transplant from a newer car would probably a good choice as they are both ligther, more powerful, and far more efficient engines.

Still, if he wants to keep it stock having the block freshened would be a good idea. I don't trust engines that have plants growing up through the engine bay....

i was able to get some numbers off the right side of the block, they lead me to believe it could be a RAM AIR IVhttp://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif

Edit:

All the numbers ive found on the damned thing

6X (Near the GM3, Left side of Block)

9796756 (right side of the block)

46-YX (Above 9796756 on right side of the block)

I also found the number 9796756 on the front side of the block as well

Its a pontiac motor for sure. Either a 350, 400 or 455. Let me see if I can find a way to decode those numbers for you.

From what I can gather its a 400 with 98cc cylinder heads.

The YX should mean 400 and the 6X should be on the heads and mean 98cc cumbustion chambers. I gotta go grill up some steaks but I will see if I can get a sure fire answer for you when i get back in a bit.

Also check here this will help you for sure.

No problem man i love old cars anyway. I am 99% sure thats a 400. My friend rebuilt a 69 firebird for his 16 year old son a couple years ago and he used a 400 and turbo 400 trans. With ported heads, street strip cam it ran high 13's. He was expecting high 12's but it just wouldnt do it no matter what he did. Pontiacs can run good but it takes alot more work and money to make them compete with chevrolet at higher levels. Its easy to make a pontiac run 12's or 11's but after that it starts to get alot harder. If it were me I would rebuild that 400 if it is rebuilable and put it back in that car to keep it original. That will be a neat car if you ever restore it and it will also be worth alot of money especially if you restore it back to 100% original.

Oh and the steaks were so tender I didnt even use a steak knife!

Evsltkzl 02-04-2007 08:55 AM

Now thats how i dig my steak, i dont see how people love steak all toughened up and burnt but a lot of people do

Ever use a little butter on your steaks after ya cooked them? I do religously... really brings the flavor out

Sounds like ya had a kings meal to me man [thumbup]

Thanks for researching and all the info... everybody... really really appreciate the help

and yeah if i can rebuild it i probably will, i can drop that corvette engine into my truck anyways[yes]

Rare steak is the ONLY way to have steak! Marinated is excellent too. A nice rub works wonders.

But it must always be rare. I even order prime rib rare.

definetly not the rover v8. that has straight up and down valvecovers. it might help if we could see the whole thing. what is it mounted in?
