I don't think you'll find much cheaper then $299 and if you do the interface is going to be more of a pain in the ass and probably won't be draftN. Anyway, why not jump for the Apple TV? It's a pretty decent box and can handle 720p video (xvid, divx, h264 stuff right now with Rev1s and soft mods), .vob DVD files, will have USB support for keyboards and stuff and probably addon storage and maybe DVD players very soon with soft mods, and has a slick interface and really easy setup. It might even have the power to record shows with 3rd party software and stuff and you can already toss in a 160Gig hard drive later if you do want a nice amount of space on it.

I'm pretty sure the Xbox is a hardware mod and can't handle 720p stuff.
didnt know it could do divx

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player, Audio/Photo/Video, 802.11g

Never tried this unit myself, but the features and price seem about right.

Default Anything similar to the apple TV
for those that are not familiar with it here is the link

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...07Q2-032707atv

basically i have lots of videos on my computer, i want to get them to the tv, svideo is not practical because of the length and id have to run a really long audio cable, so is there a cheaper alternative to the apple tv to do this? i dont need the storage space, as the files are stored on the computer, so i can do it over either wired or preferably wireless network. Bottom line is i want to watch whats on the computer on the TV

The mod is only there so it can run another dashboard than the original, the Xbox itself should be able to put out 720p "stuff".

Can it really decode 720p xvids or h264s? I thought that was the main drawback of the Xbox now (I'm not talking about a 360) if you want it as a media player.

xb1 with xbmc will playback 720 AVI fiels but it will not playback x264 files correctly. its simply not fast enough.
