I get the same thing with my fiance. Anything requiring strategy is out. She says that if it something she can't win at then it is no fun to play.
We play scategories, cranium, battle of the sexes. Actually the radica plug and play TV Wheel of Fortune is a blast. I have to suffer through the Harry Potter Scene It game so I think she should have to suffer through something I really like. Alas that doesn't work in womanland. |

Me and my wife are totally addicted to Cranium - the funniest game I've ever played with people; the singing tasks are just the best! We're quite like boardgames (which, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with why this forum exists...

Try http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ in the unlikely event that you are not already familiar with it.
As a personal recommendation (confessions, confessions...) check out War of The Ring (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/9609). In case you are into epic battles and the Hunt for the Ring in Tolkien's Middle Earth (and who isn't), you can't go wrong with WotR. It manages to recreate the atmosphere of the book quite well, and believably lets you explore many what-ifs. What if the fellowship had avoided Moria, and opted for the Gap of Rohan instead? What if Pippin lead an army of angry Dwarves into Morannon, and occupied Minas Morgul, when Sauron's armies were busy besieging Minas Tirith and Helm's Deep? (Happened to me once... not pretty.) A minus is the 3+ hour play time for the first few games, until you learn the rules. |

What kind of requirements do you have? Two players? More? Theme?
I've played quite a few board games but if you have the time, try out For Sale and Bang! They're simple card games, easy to understand, funny and great for a group of friends. I've also played Acquire last week with 4 players and it was an easy to understand fast paced business game about corporate mergers, takeovers and share market manipulation. Axis & Allies (up to 6 players iirc) and Memoir '44 (2 players with one box set, 4 with two) is recommended for WW fans. Battlelore got rave reviews if you're looking for a 2 players wargame in a fantasy setting. If you want Sci-Fi, I can't help but recommend Twilight Imperium 3rd Ed. with the expansion Shattered Empires (Note: I'm a biased TI nut). If you want something that deals with civilisation and the like, you should try Elasund: Die Erste Stadt, Settlers of Catan and Puerto Rico. All in all, Boardgamegeek (BGG) is a great place to start, check out their top 10 lists and the reviews for games there. |

Settlers of Catan is great, and once you get the hang of the mechanics, play will proceed quite quickly. It requires a minimum of 3 players, though, since trading between players is a key part of gameplay, and you need at least three for that to work well in an adversarial setting. I've also just purchased Elasund, but haven't had time to try it out yet.

Carcassonne has been a huge board game hit here in Finland and pretty much everyone I know who has tried it has enjoyed it, although serious strategists probably won't find it challenging enough.
The best thing about Carcassonne is that it's a great family game since kids can pick it up at a pretty young age and it's not too demanding for people who like more casual gaming. |
