Default Are Virgin Media ****ing stupid?
Ditching the Sky channels?

Why?

Sky even offered to sell direct to the people costing Virgin nothing, and still they refused.

Anyone else ringing sky tomorrow and switching?

I wouldn't switch so quickly if I was you (well I'm not).

This has happened before with Sky and one of the old cable companies in the 1990s. People complained and Sky eventually got put back on.

But Brandson is trying to buy all the popular shows Sky already has and put them on their on demand service.

I am not happy with what is happening. But it isn't totally Virgin's fault.
Sky asked to sell channels direct - Virgin aren't going to open up their network to other companies because they lose control over what is shown and what Sky does.
Sky doesn't want Virgin to give away SkyOne with basic package (well cable works out cheaper if Virgin does this).
Sky's viewing figures continue to fall, but they want a lot more money.
Sky won't let Virgin buy only a few of the channels (e.g. just get SkyOne and forget News/News Sports etc).

I wish they'd be a bit more transparent about this. Virgin are saying Sky tried to charge way too much more, Sky are saying it wasn't that much. I'd love to know what figures actually involved are. It makes it hard to judge this situation without them.

Yesterday, in a last ditch attempt to settle the dispute, Virgin Media was calling for an ‘arbitrator’, a third party, neutral to both sides, to review the dispute, but Sky had immediately rejected this suggestion. That says to me that sky know they are wrong...

3 pence per person per day acording to some guy from sky on bbc news, the virgin guy on there said sky were trying to charge them double of what virgin were currently paying for the channels.

dont really make sense to me either way as sky will probably lose alot of viewer ratings and that = less advertising money surely

btw they changed sky news channel from saying "Sky snooze try bbc news" to "old sky snooze" now guess they didnt want to get in trouble for telling people to watch bbc news or something

Well I just priced up the Sky HD package and and it seems I will only have to pay £15 more + price of HD box, than am paying now for VM's SD service. Although I get a lot more channels of VM, I don't watch most of them anyway.

So I am thinking about changing down to the free VM's TV service, keeping the phone and net, then going going to Sky for the TV. Although I am still going to wait to see what happens in the next week or so before ordering.

Actually they are being removed from freeview, and becoming pay per view as well. Also they are using their own encoding, which makes all freeview boxes instantly obselete. The current format is also being ditched wholesale, so eventually we will all need to upgrade our freeview boxes.

So Sky 3, Sky Sports News and Sky News will all disappear. [cursing]

Sky Freeview channels to switch to MPEG-4

As was mentioned on this site a year ago, Freeview set-top boxes look set to switch from the current MPEG-2 standard to MPEG-4.
"UK's Freeview boxes could soon be obsolete"
http://www.southgatearc.org/news/jan...6/freeview.htm
Sky have just announced that Sky News, Sky-3 and Sky Sports News are going to be withdrawn from Freeview and the capacity used for a new subscription services, Sky-1 / Sports / Movies, using the MPEG-4 standard.
None of the existing Set-Top Boxes (STB's) will be able to receive these channels and Sky say once the service has launched manufacturers will produce new compatible set-top boxes and other DTT receivers.
Because of its more efficient compression, MPEG-4 allows many more channels to be available on a multiplex. In the coming years, it is likely we will see other media companies follow Sky's example and change to MPEG-4 which would render existing STB's useless.

It sounds like you will need a HD freeview box to watch these channels. The freeview HD channels also use the same codec.

What about this package? http://allyours.virginmedia.com/webs...ct.do?id=11029

Also if you ring up virgin and tell them, they'll give it you cheaper, i've heard of some people getting that package i linked to for £60 a month.
