Default What to do with a load of old Encyclopedia Britannicas
My parents have a got a complete set Encyclopedia Britannicas, from the sixties (I think), and they want to get rid of them. They tried a charity shop but they don't want them because they're so old.

They're going to leave them out for the waste paper collection which seems a bit of a waste.

Any suggestions?

eBay?

I'd take them if I had the space. My flat can't cope with one more vanload of old junk. [no]

ebay would be your best bet, but the postage might be a problem.

Well, there are 27 aprox. 2 inch thick hardback books, so postage would be a problem.

So, on this item, the ebay shipping charge of $47.50 wouldn't be someone trying to pocket some extra change

There are several education charities who will take old textbooks and resources from you and send them to places such as Africa - I can't recall any specific names of them at the moment though.

Edit: I've remembered one now: http://www.bookaid.org/

Try a used book shop. Carry them in, get a few bucks and come back next week to see them priced 10x higher!

We tried some education charities and they said they were too old. We tried some second-hand bookshops and they said they weren't old enough!

I guess eBay is our only option.

Who ever did take them would have to come and collect them as we don't have a car.

I would e-bay them or goto a bookstore that specializes in old books.(Not 2nd hand junk store but one that deals in antique books and such)

I'm fairly certain that a complete issue of a 1960's Encyclopedia Britannica thats in a good state is worth plenty.

Far, far too old. You should just give them to someone who wants them as decoration.

We tried some, but they said they have to be over 100 years old for them to take them. [no]

This is probably not actually a problem, at least here in the states I know that if you declare you package is books then they cost A LOT less to ship per unit of weight.

I think they would make some nice furniture, it would be cool to like build a bookshelf out of old encyclopedias wouldn't it?
