Default Effective way of dealing with snakes in and around the home?
I live in an area with lots of highly venomous snakes hanging around (Cobras, Bamboo snakes etc.) and i'm concerned about the welfare of our dogs.

One incident the other week gave me food for thought on this matter - one of our Cocker Spaniels was sticking it's nose in some bamboo trees, at night, and recoiled back as though it'd had been bitten by something. The dog then winced and came inside the house, shaking it's head from side to side. As it happened, it looks as though it wasn't in fact bitten by anything (although it could've been an attack by a non-venomous snake, such as a Boa or Python) - but i'm now considering getting serious about the snakes we see at least a couple of times a week on our front lawn and elsewhere in the front and back gardens.

Are there any relatively simple ways of dealing with snakes in and around the home? I'll do anything that's necessary to safeguard our dog's wellbeing, as they're an intergral part of the family.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I´m probably alone with my opinion, but the way i see it, you live in their area.
It´s like swimming in the ocean, you can´t blaim the sharks if you get bit.

If anything, here are a few things you can do
1. allways mow your lawn (keep the grass low)
2. keep the debris around your home minimum.
3. keep wood heaps away from your house.
4. make sure that it´s clear and dry under your house (aswell as well sealed).
5. keep standing water and wet spots at a minimum.
6. seal cracks in concrete which may shelter lizards.
7. have a well maintained paling fence.

man the memories,...
I miss living in TX, i used to go out and catch snakes with my friends

btw, you could allways buy one of those snake eating Mongoose things

Ok, well we've been doing all that for a while now - the lawns, back and front, are regularly mowed and cleared of debris. The fence, although in shoddy condition in some areas, is in relatively good condition. From what i've heard though, snakes always find some way through fences (even when they're placed at extreme outward angles).

I understand the part about us humans livings in nature's backyard, but there's nothing we can do about that. We're here now, and my primary responsbility is to look after the family dogs.

Are there any relatively proven ways of trapping/killing snakes?

Don't kill the snakes. No point.

The dogs will build an immunity to the venom every time they get bit.

well none of which i really know of,
Me and my friends used to search old debris piles (from building leftovers) that where just dropped somewhere in the prarie and almost allways found one.
My main advise would just be keeping everything nice and clean around the house.
No smaller animals (mainly rodents) no snakes.

btw, another good idea would be getting a cat.

We're, at best, two hours from the nearest Vet - and they don't stock anti-venom. From what I know, dogs can go down within half an hour of a snake bite. Plus we live in a region of the world literally teaming with some of the world's most aggressive and venomous snakes, e.g. Cobras, Kraits, Pit Vipers (including Bamboo snakes).

I'd rather kill these buggers if I can - f*** the conservation bollocks.

I was about to suggest that! [cursing]

Cats are competitors for snakes and practically snatch their food away from their maw or at least scare all small rodents and birds away. No food, no snakes. [yes]

So its ok to starve them but not cut their heads off? Just seemed an inbalance in the way people thought it was ok to get a cat, but not kill them outright.

As for the solution, get bigger, hungrier, nastier dogs

Most likely they will find another place to look for food

They don´t starve,
In the end they´ll find a new home somewhere else.
