TAMA drums and Zildjan cymbals for the win. Lars Ulrich's favorite brands. I play drums a little but sold my gear long time ago.

To start with get Pearl Exports or Tama Superstars

I've played drums for about 6 or 7 years now, Ive owned a set of Pearl Masters, they were beautiful, amazing, sexy, unbelievable, then I sold them because basicly Im a tit.

So, now I have a set of Tama Superstar Customs, tamas mid range kits to go against the pearl exports, and imo they are better, they're made of birch/basswood and sound amazing.

So get Tama superstars, and cymbal wise sabian pro sonix are very good for the price, stagg do nice cheap chinas etc.

Noooo!!! Electric sets have to be the worts inventions ever. Anyways, have you looked at a Yamaha Stage Custom? My friend has it in oak, sounds awesome. I have a maple Sonor Force 3001 set. It's a midrange set (around $700). I'm happy with it.

electric is awful

is also masks skill as you get the same sound out of the drum pad no matter where you hit it
