where there was this special forces squad sent in, in a ravine in a jungle type environment. They were in contact with the commander but they got ambushed, militia were shooting from above and the commander could hear most of them being killed.

I think they got stitched up somehow and someone gave away their position. I thought Gene Hackman was the commander bloke but I have looked at all his films and I don't recognise it so maybe it wasn't
