Default There's not much that's special in organic wheat
If organic food really is healthier for you, it almost certainly has nothing to do with its nutritional content. A study comparing wheat grown organically and conventionally found that chemically they were virtually indistinguishable.
"Out of 55 metabolites, only five were statistically different in content," says Christian Zörb of the Federal Research Centre for Nutrition and Food in Detmold, Germany, who led the study team. "Even for those, the difference was less than double between the organic and conventional wheat, and none is known to alter taste or nutritional quality."
Zörb's team studied wheat of a single strain grown with uniform inputs, the only difference being whether the fertiliser used was organic or not. He says that this might give more reliable results than comparing items of unknown history bought from supermarkets (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, vol 54, p 8301).
The yields of organic wheat were 30 per cent lower, which would raise its price, though Zörb accepts that some people may be willing to pay extra for other reasons - to avoid pesticide residues, for example.
Zörb expects similar results with other crops and is now repeating the experiment with potatoes. Peter Melchett of the Soil Association, which represents organic farmers in the UK, says that the difference may be small because the crop rotation used for "conventional" wheat in the experiment was much closer to organic than usual Source

Yeah I read something similar in some health magazine, there is no research to suggest the nutritional quality of organic food is any better in the UK at least and this was an article supposed to be pushing organic food so they did make the point that organic is supposed to taste better.

Isn't that one of the main reasons people choose organic over 'normal' food. Sounds like certain interested parties funded this study to me.

one of the draws of organic food for some people is the environmental impact. ever if if organic wheat is the same as other wheat biologically, at the very least that much less herbicide and pesticide is floating around in our ground water. believe me, I grew up in an agricultural area and it's a major problem, many towns have had to sink new wells because of reckless chemical use. i'm no tree hugger or hypocrite like most of the people who buy these organic food but rethinking our food production system to be both more sustainable and more humane isn't a bad idea...

Am I one of the only people who doesn't like organic stuff? Over priced, and the quality I've noticed isn't always anywhere near as good as nuked stuff.

I have noticed that middle of the road organic stuff seems to look far better then “normal” produce when it comes to color and texture. Now, I don’t shop at any fancy organic only places so it could be that the produce that gets down to this area of the US just is not great to begin with but the organic stuff is grown closer to this area or something. Anyway, I am a fan of organic meats and I think I would be a stronger supporter of organic produce if there were stronger laws on it in the US so to keep overspray of pesticides off it and what not. Right now, I pretty much pick what looks best, and if that happens to be something organic then I go with that.

It is also impossible to sustain the whole world and the yields from organic food would only enable half the people in the world to eat.

I like the concept behind non-organic food. Engineer food to grow bigger and produce better yields, kill the bugs that eat the food so less is lost and it can be sold cheaper... But organic food tosses that right out the window, goes for the more expensive lower quality product.

I understand the pesticide issue and everything. And I'll be totally honest, the organic banannas at my grocery store are always more ripe and better tasting than the non-organic ones, even if they're smaller.

But I think there's got to be some sort of middle ground.

God damn that reminds me how much I hate greenpeace and other organisations that recruit the uninformed, stupid middle class "alternative" youth. 99.9% of the protests they run are attended by these people who have no actual idea of why they're really protesting. They almost always don't have a job, and just like to feel better about themselves because they protested against "The man". [cursing]

And? Is it better to poison it risking longterm damages?
