We have very few instincts.
Maybe. Or maybe we're able to suppress them very well. Either way, they're still there in whatever quantities.

The be all and end all of things is that instinct is an inherint trait of living organisms

Instincts are defined as inherited patterns of responses or reactions to certain kinds of stimuli

Instinctive behaviour can be seen from anything to a baby breathing, breast feeding, etc.. to an adults sex drive and a large array of emotions, considerably those basic deemed primal emotions. the ability to act comes largely from instinct in cases of fear / survival where a biological function asserts, like such stimuli as adrenaline etc, but we also have intuition.

we have an instinctual drive to breath / eat or even mate etc, what makes us different from certain species is our intuition, we choose mostly when to eat / mate, etc.. when the best times for such activities should take place. In all respects we have a choice. although instinct is what drives us on a fundemental level. we can choose not to be a slave to them. of course such action would require a lot of conscious effort. examples being fasting, celebacy etc,

because we have such large brains the human needs to be mothered for a longer periods.

you find with most animals once your dropped out of the womb your onis is to get on your feet asap and for a few weeks ur looked after but after that ur on your own

We have very few instincts. Humans are young in terms of the evolutionary chain, we haven't been on this planet for a very long time.
Ok this is the least intelligent thing i've ever read. Humans the most complex creatures on the planet = the youngest.

id like to think that somewhere deep down we have the primordial instincts we had when we were first evolving from our primate brothers

Exactly because we're the most complex species we're the youngest. We're the last in the evolution chain. In the same manner that the most simple organisms (bacteria, amoebas etc.) are the oldest in the planet since they're at the start of the evolution chain.

Throw a baby in water.

It won't breathe in water, and it will swim.

There's instinct.

It is the truth. My son when he was very young would hold his breath and try make swiming motions when I placed him in the bath tub. This was before he could even smile

Dude, what you said is a contradiction. Evolution is supposed to be mutations, so for example when we supposedly turned from apes to humans we still had the same instincts as apes and then the instincts evolved and so on.

It's not like we suddenly popped out without instincts. My opinion? evolution as actual science sees it is plain dumb.

Yes, I noticed.

However, you left out the the second part, which is that they actually swim, they don't just thrash in an uncoordinated manner!

I remeber seeing a programme a couple of years ago on the BBC by Professor Lord Winston entirely on the subject about hum an instinct and it was fascinating. His arguement at the end of the programme was that humans are the dominant lifeform on the planet, not because they have less basic instincts, but rather have MORE.
One instinct he used to back this claim up, using a cavemans jaw, was the desire to help fellow humans. This skull was missing some teeth and apparently the owner would have died, however they had not because it had healed. The only explaination was that another caveman had chewed the food for them before passing it back to the disabled caveman. Another was the desire to communicate verbally.

After some googling i found hes written a book on the subject, so go buy it and stuff it into the lecturer's face.

There is also one that everyone has forgotten about.

The Procreative instinct.

It has been proven that humans, isolated from all external stimuli, have a knowledge of procreation.

So we have babies that hold their breathe and swim, natural instinct

Humans that actively procreate without knowledge of procreation, natural instinct.

Now do the sensible thing and start a petition to get your Prof, a new set of night classes on human instinct.

Well it’s obviously arguable, I think people like to believe that we are somehow different from animals so like to believe this kind of thing but humans do have instincts…. Pretty obvious examples of this are the behavior of sleep walkers who essentially revert to state of instant well consciousness and do some pretty weird things, eat, sex and even violence… Humans have instincts, there present from birth and are always with us, yes we can control them to a certain extent but we do occasionally loose control and usually this is when they take control… Usually not resulting acceptable behavior…

If people want to believe otherwise then thats their choice, whatever helps them sleep at night I guess.
