The girlfriend and I regularly argue about whether or not Maryland is in the South. I always fall back on the Mason-Dixon Line argument, but she does not accept this position.
I think it deserves its own term ("mid atlantic"). I wouldn't call Northern Virginia or Maryland "northern" (not even the Washington region) but they aren't like the deep south either.

For what it's worth, when I've discussed this with people, I find that people who are originally from the North usually say it's more northern than southern and people originally from the South say vice versa.
